Ask a question

Welcome to ITNinja!

Warning: As a beta site, you are working in an environment known to be lacking in certain features and which may present unexpected errors. We will be working regularly to address such things but in our efforts to do so you should be prepared to experience some less than ideal circumstances from time to time...

  • Data could be wiped out
  • The site may be taken down temporarily without warning
  • If deemed necessary, the beta may even end early or experience an extended outage
  • We are still working on the point system, but what we have will give you an idea where things are headed. During beta, be prepared to see points appear and disappear as things are finalized.

We will strive to maintain as much data as possible but suggest keeping an offline copy of any significant contributions so you can be prepared to re-post if necessary.

Data on ITNinja

Despite our warnings above, it is our intention to make participation in this beta as valuable as possible. We will be making efforts to move any new content created on the site forward when migrating new data from AppDeploy. We will be migrating data periodically, but not on a predictable schedule. Naturally, there will be one final migration of data from AppDeploy at the time we perform the final cutover.

Known Issues

We will not be updating on a documented schedule but we to plan to introduce a number of updates to the site during this beta period. Our list of known issues will both shrink as we work to resolve them and grow as new issues are discovered. We will post separate blog posts regarding known issues throughout the beta period.

Some of the bigger issues on which we are currently working include:

  • You cannot add new software to the site

We want to hear from you! What are we missing here? We have lots of pending tasks to get the site ready for launch but your feedback will be instrumental in prioritizing and ensuring the things that matter most to you are among those tasks! Please use our UserVoice forum to suggest new features (and to vote upon those suggested by others).

Welcome to ITNinja Beta 2!

I’m very happy to introduce our Beta 2 version of ITNinja. The team has been hard at work improving and enhancing the site and it really shows. That said, we are still in beta (planning launch in March) and some of the bigger challenges with the site are still being addressed.

One huge task we have undertaken is to merge the AppDeploy Package KB, Software KB, Downloads and Tools all into one feature. Each software title will have its own home page with all known versions to serve as a jumping point for any information related to such software.  We still have lots of work to do pulling this data together in a clean way (believe it or not we’ve come a long way already).  The reason this is such a challenge is that we are basing the creation of these entries on inventory items and the Add Remove Programs data, which is frustratingly inconsistent and lacking between vendors, products and even between versions of the same products. We will continue to improve it, so watch for improvements there!

To make this information easier to discuss, we have made all companies, software titles and even software titles with specific versions their own individual tags on ITNinja. This means there are hundreds of thousands of tags. To deal with the huge volume of tags, we are showing only the top 2,000 in the tag box—to see all the tags we have available you’ll need to click the “load more tags” link below the tag entry box. This was a fallback approach to getting all the tags to be immediately available, but it is not a solution we will be continuing with. Right now we are working on a new interface to tagging that should do away with need for popping up a big window to navigate tags. So, for Beta 2, please bear with us, we plan to offer a much-improved solution shortly.

In addition to working on our tagging interface, we are also working on a way to allow you to add software and tags to the site yourself. Other items now in development include a means to report spam or inappropriate content, the ability to view the activity feed of another user (via their profile page) and an invite a friend feature which will reward you with Ninja points for referrals to ITNinja. Look for some of these improvements (and more) later this February!

Some known issues include…

  • What is being listed as “popular” on the site needs some work, and may currently show old, unrated listings in some cases
  • The Software pages have a place for tagged questions, blogs and link content but these lists are not getting populated at this time
  • Profile privacy settings don’t fully reflect what is displayed
  • Right now all matching blogs are displayed when browsing those matching a tag or user and this list may be very long—we will limit the length and offer a “load more” option

If you see something not working correct, please let me know here:

If you see something that is missing or needs improvement, please let me know using the “Beta Feedback” button floating on the right side of the ITNinja site!

Tagging Stuff on ITNinja

Keeping in mind that the site is under constant development, and we just chose this point in time to make it public, we know there is certainly more work to be done to polish what existing features and functionality exists today. When it comes to our software database, there are a couple of big factors that make it a little unwieldy. First off, it is pretty huge. We’ve got over 350,000 tags based on company, software title and software version. Because the database is fed by raw software inventory data, there are some ugly (and simply incorrect) software entries out there that also need attention. We will be improving the database as an ongoing task, both with big changes that correct many entries and with individual updates for more targeted corrections. So, with that said, here is now software tags are intended to work:

Company Tags. These are green in the tag selection results. If you are writing something about a company this is an obvious choice, but even if you are writing about software, say “Office” you may want to tag it with “Microsoft” as well.

Software Title Tags. These are blue in the tag selection results. If you are sharing something about any particular software, this would be the tag to choose. While we do some clean up, you are likely to find many variations of the same software titles in the tag results. Better to choose more than less, but again this is something we will be improving.

Software Version Tags. These are orange in the tag selection results. If you are sharing something that is version specific, we aim to have a major version level tag for all software.

We've also got topic tags that correspond to many popular IT topics on the site (these are in yellow in tag selection results). We've established a starting point here, but please feel free to suggest more tags as you post content and find there is a tag that appears to be missing.

Where we have minor version numbers, we will eventually set these as aliases to the major version number. That way when you view relevant content from the Software page where you are limited to choosing a major version number, you will be able to see any content that is minor version specific exists as tagged.

Because it is possible you may not find a relevant tag, we are currently allowing posts to be made without specifying a tag. However, you should try not to do this. Tags are how people will discover your content and questions so the more relevant tags you use the more exposed it will be to interested members of the community. For now anyway, I’m personally reviewing content as it appears and adding tags as I feel appropriate. You can edit your submissions at any time to add more tags (or to remove any I’ve added on your behalf). So tag away!

ITNinja Rewards

I always wanted a good reputation system that would help to give proper credit to those that spend so much effort making this community as good as it is. With ITNinja we have that, and while a little friendly competition among peers is fun, many would agree "real" prizes are even better. So for starters, this what we've got for give-aways (and I'm working to add more)...

ITNinja Sticker

Does it go on your car? On your computer? Be one of the first 500 to get their Orange Belt (>176 points) and we'll send you one of these awesome ITNinja stickers!

ITNinja T-Shirt

Now you look good, but wouldn't you look better sporting one of these babies!?! The first 300 people to attain their Blue Belt (>351 points) will find one of these in the mail shortly thereafter.

ITNinja Black Belt

I'm pretty excited about this one. Above is just a mock and I'll upload a final when I have it, but for the first 100 people to get their Black belt (>1013 points) we'll be sending an embroided black belt in an ITNinja branded plastic case to keep as a trophy of this siginificant accomplishment!

How do you score points? It's easy, just participate! For details, please see the ITNinja Points section of our FAQ.

Please be sure to fill in your mailing address and t-shirt size in the "private" section of your user profile so we can ship these off to you!

This is an old announcement, for more details and information regarding availability, please click here!
