I think Phil Wilson's The Definitive Guide to Windows Installer is probably the best place to start. I think you can download it.

Although Phil's book is great I think if you are starting off from the beginning you cant go past John McFadyens windows installer blog (http://johnmcfadyen.spaces.live.com/) OR Darwins Sanoys "Defnitive guide to Windows Installer" ebook download.

Phil's book definitely does mention basic concepts but it does get pretty advanced pretty quickly especially in some of the early chapters. If your reading about COM server registration, PROG ID, CLASS ID stuff at the beginning you can get a case of brain fry pretty quickly if your new to all that.

If your starting from scratch, start to learn about Advertised Shortcuts, Features/Components, Self Healing, Sequencing, Start reading log files and understand how properties work. The list can go on and on. Obviously jump on the forums here and read relevant posts.

Johns blog goes through all this and more for when you get to more advanced levels. When you have a good understanding of the basics his post regarding user profile healing part 1 and 2 is a must read.

Good Luck
