Rod Trent has an SMS Installer book: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Installer-Book-CD-ROM-package/dp/0072124474/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234056837&sr=8-3 and some pretty good into on MyItForum.com

Larry Duncan used to do training on SMS Installer before microsoft did anything and before wise was friendly enough for most SMS admins. i took is like 9 years ago and like it. it's sad that MS never changed the app because i still use it all the time. I did moce to Wise Packaging studio because i ran into some variable issues with SMSI and i wanted to be able to better protect my scripts. i love the fact that i can copy/paste code between SMSI and wise now. SMS installer is great for repackage captures for me because i'm familiar with the output.

Microosft Licensed the code for SMSI from Wise who at one time was Great Lakes Business Solutions. Ever wonder why the temp files created by SMSI are named GL1234.tmp ?

SMS Installer is pretty old school and still useful sometime. I use SMS Installer a fair bit. I too was looking for books and tutorials but they have very limited information on the net.

Books: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Installer-Book-CD-ROM-package/dp/0072124474

Pressing F1 helps me a lot I find.

I never used Wise script. How does that compare to SMS Installer.

I'm pretty sure that Wise Script IS the old SMS installer, although Wise has added to it and enhanced it since the SMS installer days. Most of their development has gone to Windows Installer since that is the standard now.

I think Owen's right. I seem to recall giving someone a hand at a client eons ago and recognising the UI as that of Wise Installer. It adds up, since these two were working in collaboration on Windows Installer.

interesting bit o' trivia. Chipster gets a ratings point! [:D]
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
