SAV Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 9.0CE

Several folks at our site have tried and failed to make a working MSI of Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 9.0. The common problem is that on first login, the user gets a dialog saying cant find the MSI. When you manually direct it to the MSI it says its not a valid MSI for that product. All you can do is cancel the install, which leaves an entry that can't be removed from add/remove programs without using msicuu2.exe (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301). All the above is deploying via GPO, btw. Installing the same MSI by doubleclicking on the MSI itself (rather than through GPO) works in some cases, but obviously isnt what we need for enterprise-wide deployment. I'm using WinInstallLE, but others have also tried using WISE and a home-grown diff product.

Has anyone successfully deployed SAV9 via GPO?

Doesn't SAV come with its own deployment console? Aren't silent setup switches supported for other deployment methods like GPO?

IMHO you really shouldn't be trying to repackage antivirus software with anything other than the Vendor provided tools. If it comes in MSI format, you should be able to customize it with a transform using Wise or WinINSTALL. But you should never try to repackage it.

Last time I repackaged antivirus software was with WinNT 4 and McAfee, using WinINSTALL 5. Even then it was really hairy to get working. I shudder to think what it would be like now.

Correct. I just set this up on a small office build last weekend. Installing the server server software and the management plug in will allow you to push the client install to all client machines silently.

Very easy to do.

I worked a packaging contract using a software called Managesoft and we couldn't package SAV to save our lives. After crunching on it for a month I stumbled onto SAV management console. We had it rolled out a week later.
