Minor Issues with WininstallLE9.5

I have made the following working packages using Wininstall 10.5. Few like adobe flash etc did not work

CorelDrawX4
Fireworkslbl 4
FoxitPdf Reader
icq2003
MicroSoftSyncToy2
nero8
Photoshop7 (gives a type library registration error but works)
QQeng2005 (Chinese chat program)
StormCodec7
winzip12
7Zip4.65
yahoo8
Rediff India 7 messenger

They all get installed via GPO but sometimes when a user logs in there is a message like Please wait while windows configures yahoo messenger 8. This lasts less than 5 seconds.

Why does it happen? How to do a full and final install? This means that my netshare has to be available at all times? Altiris/Juice has come up with a rather incomplete rig setup guide and they did not respond to my queries anyway so I was unable to use WPS 7 etc.

BTW people on Altiris site think that Wininstall was last released in 2003. I can upload some created msi files in case someone wants to have a look to advice me.

This behaviour is by design. What you are seeing is the installation of user profile files and/or registry data.

I'm afraid I don't understand your point about Juice's setup guide meaning that you couldn't use WPS.

Hi dvdzonenz,

I'm an Altiris Forum Advisor and I can't recallI've seen a similar post there.
Are you talking about the forums.altiris.com or juice.altiris.com site?

(These sites are not monitored by Altiris/Symantec employees.)

Hi,

Actually sometimes the configuration thing is trigerred even in same account but it is only when the program is started and is always less than 5 seconds.

WPS is a complex package and therefore I could not make much progress in it. I am still trying to make some sense out of the online documentation.

The series is here

http://www.symantec.com/community/book/6631/wise-package-studio-beginners

This looks detailed at the first glance but I was not exactly comfortable when the designer built a Workstation type package(Abi Word processor) on the WPS server (windows 2003 server) itself though WPS has various clean machine features.

A very important page http://www.symantec.com/community/article/6654/wise-package-studio-part-6-building-xp-client-packaging-machine was having unusable screenshots though the contributor is quite responsive.

The links you provided has been user provided and not by Wise, Altiris nor Symantec (same company).

I'm sure what you are seeing is an Active Setup being triggered once and next time the user logon it doesn't.
If that isn't not the case you need to check the event viewer to see what gets self-repaired; if it's an MSI that is.

That is actually even worse. This product costs thousands of dollars and there are no books in shops to teach it.

Of late has become common to sell a product and then create a user forum as the sole means of support. The task of the users is how to go around missing/incorrect documentation and still make the product a success story.

I think I have to keep on looking for now.

There is nothing wrong in users helping out each other and you are here for help, right? Event Microsoft has forums supported by non-employees.

The documentation can be found at http://www.altiris.com/Support/Documentation.aspx for all Altiris products. If you are going to spend money on a product then make sure to read the documentation which many others don't.
If you're going to buy a book then it shouldn't be regarding Wise Package Studio (that's what the documentation is there for) but Windows Installer (which Microsoft created) to understand its technology. Now days google usually is enuf [;)]

The juice is not like the forum, the forum has dedicated people to help out regarding Altiris different products.

Creating Windows Installer packages is nothing you learn by one day, it's a steep learning curve and the Windows Installer SDK (CHM) is one of the few (if only) manuals I have as a sticky on my "side" for a quick reference when needed.

There is nothing wrong at all with people helping each other. A company can take only so many brainy people. My queries were partially answered on almost all forums. In fact I would be happy if people use Wininstall to pack the applications from my list.

I started with 260 prepackaged applications (with detailed building documents) in Wise 6 so I thought I should consider Wise 7. But now it turns out that the packager has packaged them in his own way. My Corel Draw 12 question is an example (Corel released a method but the packager went ahead and added some propeties etc onto an .msi).

You would find it interesting that Nero-8.2.8.0_eng_update based installations crash when done by the book. Nero advises to rename the registration .dll files to disable registration nags which seems a bit strange. I on the other hand, pakaged a non official Nero8 Micro and it works flawlessly. The best packagers are outside.

Now reading some MSI documentation.

I had a second look and if you click the screen shot you can actually see what it is, all though the quality could be better.

Ok. I will not call them unusable.

I think they are they view backbenchers get when something is explained on the board.

Though the first chapter had first rate images

as seen on https://www-secure.symantec.com/community/article/6565/wise-package-studio-part-1-installing-and-configuring-wise-package-studio-7

I missed this one.
The Windows Installer Configuration progress bar is due to a "forever-repair loop" which should only occur on first-launch.
Check the event viewer as it will state which product, feature and component that triggered the self-check (entrypoint; also called Darwin Descriptor) and which component that was found broken and therefore triggered the repair which it seems it is not successfully in doing.

Could be a temporary file that is set as keypath, you need to check the event viewer to get the evidence, a verbose log could also come in handy if required but should be enuf with the eventvwr.
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
