Issues with IE8 install

Running an upgrade over existing IE7 on Win XP SP3 machines. Using the IEAK and built a installer and on some machines it will run and event logs show:

Event ID 11728 Product: Internet Explorer -- Configuration completed successfully.
Event ID 11707 Product: Internet Explorer -- Installation completed successfully.

But the product on the desktop is still IE7, after reboot and try again same results. This is only one a few machines, but with a 26,000 client environment I would be afraid to try to deploy this. I have deleted the Search Scopes through registry and same results on the machines that shows this symptom. No logs either.

Any ideas?

Nope. IE7 is there and open just fine after a reboot. No error logs anywhere or any event log entries related. And I have not found a way to use IEAK and the /log option.

Normally a self-repair should take place on user first log-on after install.

I think this is launched with active setup.

Ouch, well I just found out our Symantec SEP is shutting the install down. This doesn't really explain the install successful messages in the Event log. I found out when I tried to install the regular installer from the MS technet site without using the IEAK.

Intresting. What is the name of a file you are using (source?). And what is the command line are you running during deployment?
