Get to grips with your HW & SW Environment
You can't manage what you don't understand. An automated and regular (at minimum daily) inventory of all PCs including their hardware and software details will give you the information you need to effectively maintain and secure your PCs. Look for a solution that not only provides regular and deep inventory, but one that provides the reporting and alerts to easily digest all the data generated.

Dudes, if you've never heard of it try Spiceworks (www.spiceworks.com). It's a free (ad suppoorted in the browser) agentless software and hardware inventory system, scans software installed, sends daily updates via email, contains a helpdesk feature too, reporting elements... just loads man. It's currently on version 4.5 so is quite mature and has a quite dedicated following and community surrounding it. Go take a look!!!
