K1 can use  Windows OS (win 7 or win10)as a replication storage for the k1 software and patches. It only needs to have the kace agent installed on it .

The k2 however needs a remote site appliance, which is a mini version of the k2 installed on the remote site or subnet.

It is can be installed from an OVF on a virtual machine. It is essentially a FreeBSD operating system like the K2 itself.

The admin Guides for have all the information on deploying both the K1 and the K2 to remote sites.
