If you do not follow traffic rules, it does not mean you will meet with an accident everytime.......but it is best practice to follow rules, so that you can reach to your destination safely...

When it comes to MSI repackaging everything is based on Windows Installer so Microsoft's Roadmap to Windows Installer Documentation is the most important 'best practice'. Take your time to get familiar with Windows Installer and MSI packages. You might want to start by studying MSI structure, Packages, Features, Components and Component Rules, GUID's, Key Paths, Sequences, Standard Actions, Shortcuts, Files, Registry Settings...
