I have a built from scratch program done with Visual Studio Express:

I want the original install (MSI) to run from a network location. (I wish I had access to the better options.)

I want installed versions of the software to check a location on a LAN for an updated version of the program and prompt the user to upgrade if applicable.

This is something I have seen with Office and with web deployments of MSI packages. The package being deployed will under go several updates during its lifespan.

The tools I have familiarity with are the WIX installer and the Visual Studio Express tools.

The two main players (Altiris/Wise and InstallShield) have options in their authoring tools for web deployment. I think they're good places to start.

If you're not using those tools, I recall looking into adding automatic updates to a couple of my utlitities and found innumerable examples on the web. Try Planet Source Code http://www.pscode.com for starters.
