The most useful Windows 7 trick I have found so far

Cutting to the chase: Use ".\" to login as a local user.

I worked heavily with Windows 7 for the last year and just recently figured this out. I mourn all the lost time attempting to figure out the computer name. Now I can quickly figure out the computer name from the login prompt. I can quickly login (or authenticate) as a local user without ever having to think about the computer name. I love this.

  • I'm not sure I'd call it the greatest improvement from XP to Win7 (the search bar in the start menu is the best IMHO, I only have to open the control panel about once a month thanks to it) but it is definitely one of the most useful. - Ben M 12 years ago
  • Try creating a new folder on a Windows 7 desktop and give it the following name.

    GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

    I don't use it as much as I thought I would, but it's still a neat trick. - Dubnium 12 years ago
  • That shortcut ".\" for the local host also worked on Windows XP. - RichB 12 years ago
