I want to remove the "my computer" and possbily some of the other tabs visible on the user portal?  Is there a way to do this?

You can go to Helpdesk > Roles and create a new role and hides the My computer tab. Then use that role as the default role for all users. That can be configured under settings> control panel> user authentication.
