User-initiated deployment solution

Hello!

I am looking for a tool for deploying applications to both Windows and Linux environment. The users are using zero clients, so the operating systems and desktops are virtualized. Applications can be virtualized or installed directly to the server hosting the desktops, that is not an issue. Now, this is where the situation gets tricky: I want the users to select the application to be deployed from the list on our current management console. Therefore the deployment tool must have some kind of API the console could call with the application name and other details. Of course, license management should be taken care of as well, but that can be done also on the management console (i.e. it wouldn't display the applications that already have all the licenses in use). The users should also be able to remove the application whenever they wish. That should work on the same manner as the installation I just described.

For the management there should be an interface where we could force patches, security updates and other stuff to users' applications whether they are currently online or offline.

An added bonus would be virtualized applications so that our Linux users could run some Windows software as well, for example Outlook.

Endeavors Technologies' Application Jukebox is very near what I'm trying to accomplish, but it doesn't support Linux.

If you have any ideas, comments or recommendations, I'd love to hear them!

Speaking from a position of almost total ignorance, it sounds like Citrix XenApp would suit.

Hi, and thanks for the reply!

XenApp would be perfect, but it supports only Windows applications. I have Windows and Linux desktops, and at least Linux desktop users need to have something like XenApp to deploy their Linux applications as well. For Windows users it would be a nice bonus to be able to use virtualized Linux applications, but that's not a must.

I know that there are several solutions for different Linux distributions, but I'd prefer having one solution for this environment instead of creating separate systems and processes for Linux and Windows users.
