SCCM & VMWare Servers

Does SCCM SP2 work if run from a VMWare Server? We are going to deploy SCCM this year and we would like to install it and run it all from VM's, including the SQL Server. Is this done or does Microsoft recommended against this?

Since you can access a virtual installation of SCCM on Microsoft's site for trial purposes, I assume it will run fine in a VM. The question is whether or not Microsoft supports it in a VM environment. If they do, they would probably recommend Hyper-V over VMWare, and they may only support Hyper-V.

I just found a technet article about this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd547071.aspx

Supported Virtualization Environments
Configuration Manager 2007 supports client installation and all site server roles in the following virtualization environments:

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 (with no service pack and SP1)

Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V

Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008

Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP)

Thanks. Now, is anyone on this appdeploy site running SCCM 2007 from a VMWare platform? MS may not support it but I am wondering if it even works.

I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't - MS is simply plugging Hyper-V by force. You could try running a trial installation in a VM to test. That is, if nobody here has it running in a production VM environment.

Yes, it works fine from a virtual environment. However, it's not recommended because of the massive disk I/O that SCCM has. You really have to make sure that none of your other systems running on the same hardware are going to make much use of whatever storage you have attached to them.

I've been running an SCCM 2007 infrfastructure in VMWare vSphere for about two years now without a hitch. This year, I added a second environment with SCCM 2012 and it's running just fine as well. Pretty soon, I'll move all my clients to the new CM12 site and shut down the CM07 infra.

Just make sure you give your VMs plenty of disk space and RAM and you'll be fine.
