What's the best software packaging tool to use?

Our company is currently using Wise Package Studio 7.  Now that it was put to end by Symantec, is there a good packaging tool that you can recommend specifically that's well suited for Windows 7 both 32 and 64bit?

  • I know this is an older thread but hoping someone is still watching it.

I always liked the Script Editor tool. I used it for more than simply packaging applications. It was great for reading text files and getting data. I also created a lot of custom utlities. You could also add passwords as variables during time of compile meaning the password was hidden in the EXE. Does anyone still offer a similar tool? - CAPPipe 3 years ago

Answer Summary:
AdminStudio, latest Version 11.5, is the best tool in market today for Application Packaging. It includes Installshield in it. There are other tools which come along with it like converting to App-V, ThinApp-, ACT and many more. Good and convenient alternative (not popular yet though) is MSI Generator.

PACE Suite is the most optimal software packaging tool on the market today - both from the cost and the functionality standpoints.
You can try it for FREE with no limitations on the features here:

No Offences but, InstallShield is just a tool to edit the MSI and create MST and I am saying this because one can go and buy just Installshield. You do not get Repackager with it.

This tool is expensive becauase Flexera has a monololy in the market today for packaging tools.

I use MSI Generator for MSI packaging and MST creation for vendor MSI more than 1 year. It's very good product.

  • I used Wise Package Studio and AdminStudio earlier, but now I prefer MSI Generator - it is a lot better. - sandrem 11 years ago
  • one of additional pros for MSIGen is it works much better with Assemblies, than Wise. - ZaxXxaR 11 years ago
  • Nice tool because of its convenient functionality (e.g. you do not have to just sit and wait while snapshot is being done - you can keep on editing package details and setting instead - great time saving!). Another unique feature I like is that the tool does scan ACL changes in a system - great effort saving for further package debugging! - Vano 11 years ago

I would vote for Adminstudio+installshield. For MST creation you can use ORCA.

You can try EMCO MSI Package Builder: http://emcosoftware.com/msi-package-builder/convert-exe-to-msi. It uses more advanced capturing technology than before&after snapshots, so it can associate all captured changes with processes that perform these changes. As the result you can filter out unwanted changes.

It's very pity that Admin Studio killed the Wise Package Studio, wise it was a great and convenient tool. I don't like flexera due to bulky interface. Propose to try the MSI Generator (at least it can scan permissions during capturing ).  I truly believe that it can be the next "wise", it only depends that is more useful than "buggy"

Smart Packager Pro -- if I can use it, anyone can.  Very simple but you can make it as customizable as you want.

I have used an older version of AdminStudio and it was fabulous!  I don't know the pricing but it was able to do what we needed and was easy to use.  We had a Novell Environment and I wasn't as fluent with scripting as I am today.  Worked like a charm.
