'nested installation' is a term used when an (msi) installer actually, as part of its installation steps, contains in some way another msi installer, and launches its installation.

So in details, an MSI contains, either as a file, or in its binary table, or with its sources, another msi, and installs it through a custom action. For technical details on how to do this see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306439

I would like to add on a personal note that I'm not a big fan of nesting MSI installs. The link above also has some drawbacks to this approach, which pretty much explain why that is.

If nested MSI is not very convincing way I would like to know if is there another way (Other than wrapper script to achieve this ?? :-( - The_D 10 years ago
    • Keep them separate and use your deployment tool to 'chain' the installs together. - dunnpy 10 years ago
