Trouble with Windows 7 updates

Has anyone had any trouble updating Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate Edition.
I have no clue on what has happened as everything was fine up to today..It just hangs and does not do anything.
I have to restart windows explorer to get rid of the hour glass. I am puzzled..Maybe a virus?

I don't think its a virus issue. Automatic updates are enabled in Windows 7 by default.
This reduces the processing speed of the computer hampering your work as major chunk of the bandwidth is used by updates only. If you want Windows 7 to ask you before downloading and installing updates, change the options in 'Choose how Windows can install updates' page through control panel.

major chunk of the bandwidth is used by updatesCareful with your language here. WU uses BITS which throttles the download speed according to CPU usage (amongst other factors).

The actual installation is what's probably hogging the CPU. I'm willing to bet that the OP is receiving the .Net Framework updates: v3 SP1 and probably v4, too. These are major clunkers. I'd advise using windowsupdate.com and selecting the updates you want to install before retiring for the night.

Yes, you are correct and to the point as always.
