Variability in any environment makes for difficult management. The more PC hardware, applications and peripherals you have the more difficult it will be to manage all these items. For instance, it's much easier for you to support your users on one version of Microsoft Office versus three. Similarly, your image maintenance workload will be much smaller if you only have to maintain images for 3 or 4 hardware platforms versus 10. The first step in standardizing your environment is creating policies for what PC hardware and software should be used in your organization.
