Hi there,

I am getting an error message "Setup requires Internet Explorer version 5.0.2314.0 or above" when installing SQL 2000 msi. I created the msi with the latest service pack 4 for SQL 4 but still getting the error message. Researched the error online, and tried the following fixes:

1) Add "APPS_TEST" property table for the .msi installation and assigned some value, - did not help.
2) Went to DrLocator table and changed:
[SystemFolder.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2C064397B] to [SystemFolder].

That did not help either, now i am getting directory error.

Any ideas how that can be fixed?

Thanks,
XaviorPL

Hi Sebastian,

Please go to the following link which is an article in the Microsoft KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q274224/.
Also if you can create a log for the same we could analyse the reason for failure and help you work around it. In the meanwhile APPS_TEST should be set to 1 and the link also says something about the Product Language property (sorry for such a hasty reply, this cos I am running a bit late... )

Cheers

Hi there,

I already tried your suggestions which i got from Microsoft's webstie and it did not work. I have APPS_TEST property set to 1 as well as ProductLanguage set to 1033. I am still getting the same error.

Below you'll find the content of my log file:

Hi Sebastin,

I think it is one problem that was reported by a lot of users and Microsoft states that they have rectified the problem. I suggest that you look into the application closely and the mechanism which checks the built for IE 5.0 or higher to be installed.

Setup requires Internet Explorer version 5.0.2314.0 or above.
Action ended 14:25:17: FatalErrorIE.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2C064397B. Return value 3.
Action ended 14:25:17: INSTALL. Return value 3

This clearly states that there is a problem with the application in looking for IE whether its installed on your machine or not.

Also, please whenever you are studying any log file please search for the term 'Return value' through out the file. If you if find its value as 3 then it means that there has been problem. Also you may just resort to copying only that part of the log or any other portion which you feels suspicious about rather than copying the entire thing.
For your package i think search more about it online and also analyse the .msm that I think is a part of your package.

Cheers [;)]

...so why not advise how to fix or, more correctly, bypass it? :)

As ever, you should NOT edit the MSI directly, but create a transform for it. In the transform, find the Custom Action (CA) called 'FatalErrorIE.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2C064397B' and either comment it out or, what I do nowadays, add an impossible-to-meet condition to its execution. I do that by creating a property called, say, 'FatalErrorIE_Bypass' and assign it a value of 1. The actual value is irrelevant, so long as your test is for some other value. Then add the condition 'If FatalErrorIE_Bypass = 0' to that CA.

BTW, Rajit makes a good point. Posting complete logs is pointless. In the overwhelming majority of cases, a failed action will return a value of '3' so, when posting log extracts, find the text 'Return value 3.' and only post, say, the dozen lines above and dozen below that line.

Hi Ian,

The main reason for asking Sebastin to look closely into this application was because I was not sure whether SQL Server 2000 MSDE merge modules that maybe would be a part of the application may actually contain the CA (which was responsible for mechanism that checks presence of IE). And I think editing the standard MS msm would not be a good idea. But as you said, if it is part of the application .msi it becomes simple.

Cheers

OK, Rajit, sorry, my mistake. I *completely* missed the 'merge module' thing! That'll teach me to read things thoroughly and to follow any links.

At any rate, the MSM could still be edited especially if the CA is conditioned and not removed.

Guys,

Thanks alot for your help. I was able to comment out the CA 'FatalErrorIE.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2C064397B' but now i am getting the following error:

Internal Error 2705. Direcotory.

Will keep on working on it tomorrow.

Thanks,

2705 normally means there's a break in the directory 'tree' somewhere. http://itninja.com/question/help-with-msi-1398

If you're using Wise Package Studio, this normally highlights the row containing the error in red when you use the 'Setup Editor' view, go to the 'Tables' tab and then select the 'Directory' table.

Sometimes, validating the package provides a quick route to locating the break, too.

Were you able to get around these problems? I have an app which requires the SQLSVR merge module and this bug is getting on my nerves.

Then why not create your own? Download the SQL version you require, extract the MSIs and convert them to MSMs using your packaging tool. Wise and InstallShield make this trivially simple.

I have actually never done this. Will give it a try and let you know.
