if the exe is a self-extracting archive, open it with WinZip or a similar tool. If that does not work, while running the exe, keep an eye on the %TEMP% and %AppData% folders of the installing user. Any MSI contained in the exe should get extracted there.

  • In addition to PJ's answer. Depending on the Install Compiler (InstallShield, WISE, etc) you can also use /extract for WISE, /a for InstallShield. If WinZip doesn't work try WinRAR. - Trinity 12 years ago

Some EXE can also be extracted using the /x command. If you can't find the MSI in any of the temporary folders, use a tool like Install Watch and record the process of launching the EXE.

I would recommend Total Commander (with various plugins). It can also be used to view contents of and extract files from msi-files and cabs making it very useful as an application packager.

I've had great success with 7zip and doing an extract here to see all the files.
