I have come across multiple articles about how there will seem to be a phantom lock on a document (network shared) by another user. I'm having the opposite problem. I have a shared excel document that doesn't show locked by any users when multiple users have it open. This is creating problems when another user overwrites another user's work. None of the document protection settings are turned up, and this wasn't a problem as of a couple weeks ago. The behavior I expect to see when a user opens a document that's already opened by another user is that they will get the locked for editing message. This does not happen. I haven't been able to find a specific article that addresses this problem, so I'm looking to the all-wise IT Ninjas community for advice. Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

There were quite a few hits when I googled on "excel file not locked when in use". 
There are various opinions - one suggests it's a server issue, but also one user reports this problem went away when the workstations were all migrated to the same windows O/S.

  • Just so you know, your first link is for a proprietary product called peer lock. Your second article is better. The best answer I got from sorting through it is that Windows XP may not create a temp file when the document is opened that would initiate the file lock. Windows 7 will do this and the recommended solution is to upgrade the operating system.
    • Just so you know, I only skip read the hits that google throws up. Since you were unable to find anything to help with your query, I was just introducing you to Google and the search string I used to find a couple of probably matches. ;-)
