Manual installation of the package is fine.

My initial thought would be that there may be a Custom Action in the UI sequence (i.e. which gets run during what you call a 'manual install') which isn't present in the Execute sequence and which therefore doesn't get run in silent installs (which is in essence what a GPO-pushed install is.)

It should be easy enough to prove by running a silent manual install. If it fails with the same error, you just need to tie down the errant CA.

Is your GPO package being assigned by user or machine? And the package for the previous version? Is it the same? You'll have all sorts of fun trying to upgrade per-machine installs with a per-user one (and vice-versa) via GPO.

are these CA's sequenced outside of InstallImmediate and InstallFinalize ?

Often these CA's are screwed up from the vendor. Usually they incorrectly use immediate CA's when they should be deferred.

LOL...missed that. Nice catch, John. What makes this *really* sad is that the WI engine is set up to flag what is a basic error as 'Unspecified'. It beggars belief, it really does...
