How to create a report/alert for printer toner level?

At UserKon, I was shown how to create SNMP inventory configurations and I have it set up so that KACE is pulling toner levels for a printer but I cannot, for the life of me, remember how to create a scheduled report that will kick off an alert on thresholds.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • First, you need to create an asset subtype for assigning your printers an agentless connection.
    Go to Asset Management, Asset Types, and from here, it's up to you, but I was told to add it under "On Domain Inventory". From what I understand, you can be as granular as you want, but I started small with just "Monochrome Printer" and "Color Printer". In each one, you'll need to add Subtype Fields (black toner for the monochrome subtype and black and each color toner for color subtype). For name, you'll name accordingly. Type: will be "Number" (for numerical reporting), and Device Section will be Monitoring (because you're going to monitor these). In the Subtype Fields, you can lean it out to just fields that apply to your printer. Summary, etc.

    You have to create an SNMP discovery schedule in Inventory, Discovery Schedules, "Choose Action", New, Authenticated, and then plug in your IP range for your printer VLAN or individual IP addresses of your printers.

    Run the schedule to pull the printers into your inventory and then browse to Discovery Results, put a check in the box next to your printer and use the drop-down menu to choose "Provision", Agentless: Manual. You will have a set limit of how many Agentless devices you can have. I have the original K1000 so I have 5 with my initial license. Of course, you can buy into more. I'm still in preliminary testing, so I haven't put in a request for more yet.

    Now that you've provisioned the agentless devices, they'll show up in your Inventory, Devices section.

      • In an email with Ken Galvin, I was told that it's 5 for the K1000 but 20 for the K1200. I guess no one realizes there's still old K1000 appliances kicking it around. I was disappointed, for sure. - Brady Williams 6 years ago

    • Okay so I was at UserKon as well and following what was shown I got to the point where I found the OID's and need to add them to the subtype fields but it keeps saying please enter a valid integer even when I copy from MIB program. - sklevine 6 years ago

    • Just a heads up, there was a little back and forth, but in the end I did get grandfathered in and bumped up to 20 agentless devices. I now have 5 servers and 20 agentless devices included on my 1100 appliance. So I would email support if you're interested in being bumped up. - five. 6 years ago

  • Maybe grandfathered in isn't the right word. But they matched the 20 on the 1200, based on me saying it was promised at UserKon. The name on my support ticket was Mark Lomas. - five. 6 years ago

Brady, the life of the party!

You've done the hard part. Now you go to Inventory - Devices - on the right side you'll see: Advanced Search | Smart Label | Notification. Choose Notification and set your threshold there and set it to send an email.

The two methods I've seen mentioned on the forums to limit the frequency of emails:

    • I think in the past you had to do:
      Reporting > Notifications > Choose Action > New > Device Notification

      But now that just takes you to device inventory notification. You can get to it either way. - five. 6 years ago
      • Ok!! I have it emailing reports but I have more questions.... what's the best practice for this? If I have my frequency set to every 15 minutes for quickest resolution, I'm going to get slammed with emails. Thoughts? Suggestions? - Brady Williams 6 years ago
