To locate the install file, download the small setup file from http://messenger.yahoo.com/. When running the setup, while it is downloading components of the Internet, locate the complete installer file, ymsgr_inst_us.exe, by searching the user data folder (%LOCALAPPDATA%) and copy out the ymsgr_inst_us.exe file.

Note
As noted in previous post, download the small installer from the website. Should be about 400-500k. Start the downloaded installer.

Before selecting your installation options, find the temporary folders that the installer has created. Two new folders are created in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp. (They were not created in %APPDATA% in my install but in the %TMP% or %TEMP% path.) Sort by date to find them easily.

One folder had a .tmp extension on it. Ignore this one. Open the other folder. During my install, it was just the number "6241626" but yours may be different.

Go back to your installer and select Custom Install at the top. Check off the options you want; clear the ones you don't, etc. Click "Install" on the final screen of setup.

Quickly switch to that temp folder you opened before. You will see a new file called "ymsgr_inst_us.exe" which should be greater than 14MB in size. Copy this file to your desktop before your installation finishes, as it will disappear at the end of the install. This is your customized installer.

ymsgr_inst_us.exe /Q

...to install silently with your custom settings. :)
