Rated 2 / 5 (Somewhat Easy) based on 2 ratings
Most Commonly Reported Deployment Method

Deployment Tip Summary

mseinstall.exe /s /runwgacheck /o
30
Command Line
After extracting the download file, run:

setup.exe /s /runwgacheck /o

There is no popup window when you include the /o switch. You get a silent install with no restart. The installer starts the MsMpSvc service, creates a desktop shortcut, creates a single shortcut at the base of Start Menu\Programs, creates the MSSE value in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to launch the tray icon upon next reboot (but does not launch it immediately after Setup), and quietly proceeds to download updates of both the engine and signatures. Both shortcuts are created for All Users and are traditional shortcuts (not MSI "advertised" type).

To uninstall silently:

"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Security Essentials\setup.exe" /x /s

This will close the tray icon (msseces.exe) if running, stop the MsMpSvc service if running, and remove the program files, shortcuts, registry entries, and signature data. The only things left behind are *.log and *.etl (event log) files in Microsoft\Microsoft Security Essentials\Support under the All Users AppData path. There is no prompt for restart but 4 files which are in use during uninstall won't be deleted until the next restart. They are added to PendingFileRenameOperations in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager.

If you run setup /? it will say that command-line options are not supported. All of the options above are working in 1.0 but Microsoft does not officially support them. Therefore, they could stop working in a future release.

For a silent install:

setup.exe /s /runwgacheck

The software still pops up a window and begins latest definitions download & a Quick Scan though.

The Installation-Directory (Standard) for MSE changed, so you'll not be able to use:

"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Security Essentials\setup.exe" /x /s

any longer for a silent uninstall. Instead, you'll have to use

"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Security Client\setup.exe" /x /s

Note

In addition to antivirus, MSSE includes all the antispyware functionality which was in Windows Defender. On Vista, the MSSE installer will automatically disable Defender. However, on Windows XP (which does not come with Defender built-in like Vista), if Defender was previously installed, you should uninstall it before installing MSSE.

Note

It's possible to deploy this with Active Directory Software Distribution (obviously other methods as well in the combination MSI + MST).

Download the mseinstall.exe from Microsoft and open it in WinRAR or 7Zip (other extractors might work as well). The example I use here is for the x64 version.

In the folder amd64 you can find the epp.msi file which you can edit with ORCA (Google "ORCA msi editor" if you don't know what it is). Now create a new Transform file and add the following values to the table "property" located in the left column.

AMPRODUCT  MORRO
PRODUCTICON  @C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\EppManifest.dll,-100
PRODUCTLOCALIZEDNAME @C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\EppManifest.dll,-1000
REMEDIATIONEXE  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\msseces.exe
SIGNATURECATEGORYID 6b9e8b26-8f50-44b9-94c6-7846084383ec
PRODUCT_SKU  MSEv2
WATCHECKDLL  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\mssewat.dll
MARKET   nl-nl (used in this example because I'm dutch) Optional: INSTALLDIR  c:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\

Save the new transform with a name to your liking and add the MSI and the new MST to the Active Directory Software Distribution or any other deployment method.

Only use this product for home-usage!

Hi,

The commandline option for uninstall seems to have changed.

With version 4.4.304 I needed to use the following parameters for a proper uninstall:

"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Security Essentials\setup.exe" /u /s

Setup Information:
Setup Type: Windows Installer (Delivered as an EXE)
Deployment Method Used: Vendor Provided Command Line (switch driven)
Deployment Difficulty: Somewhat Easy
