Wise Package Studio 8 Release Date...

According to this WPS8 is going to be announced on 8th Oct and released on 29th Oct... The link off to the Symantec site however is no longer valid so who knows!

Out of interest, is anyone on here going to the Packaging Event 2009 in Amsterdam?

Cheers,
Rob.

Given the track record, I'll probably wait for SP1. Given the track record, I'll likely be retired by then.

Amsterdam? Won't most of us be engaged in productive work? Leave junkets to the managers.

MSIPackager,

I was thinking about the Packaging Event, but as the information on some of the speakers is in Dutch, I was wondering how much of the content would be in Dutch too.

I know that Bob's doing a keynote, but if the rest of it is going to be in Dutch...then I'm not going to get much out of it.

Can Bob shed any light?

And then it starts so early that you have to arrive the day before and leave the day after the event - which is not something I'm complaining about - if I can get work to pay for the trip [:D]

Thanks,

Dunnpy

I've spoken the last couple of years and have also attended other sessions-- I can't say for certain about this year, but in the past there was always at least one english session taking place. It would limit the sessions you chose to attend, but what I saw was very informative. The schedule is here: http://packagingevent.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49&Itemid=12

I'll ask my contact there if they can update it to reflect language there or reply here.

Hi All,

WPS8 ( Wise Package Studio 8) is going to be released on the 29. October 2009.
The prelaunch will be at Packaging Event 2009.

For the fourth time Packaging Event is organized by PDS ( Professional Development Systems)
They Keynote sessions ( AppDeply, Acresso and Symantec) are in English.
The Technical Sessions are mainly in Dutch except:
- the WorkFlow Manager session from Acresso.
- the Raynet sessions

This FREE event is unique because of the presence of Acresso and Symantec at one event.
Also unique because of the many solution providers presenting at the event
with solutions for your Application Management and Application Virtualization challenges.

Most important : Bob Kelly ( AppDeploy.com) will present the Opening Keynote Session!

Check out : packagingevent.com for more information.

Thanks,

Jeroen ( PDS)

Haha there's no chance of that until SVS officially dies a death - which has only got to be a matter of time...

Turbo - at least they didn't drop support for XP!

To be honest, I find the packaging event a bit disappointing. Instead of any in-depth technical sessions which I was hoping for most of the attending parties seem to focus only on commercial blabla talk to get the managers drooling.

While AdminStudio announced their 2010 product with some significant updates and enhancements, the guys working the WPS booth shrugged their shoulders and admitted 8.0 is a total bug fix and catchup release with no new features. If you are a fan of WPS, the good news is that development activity seems to have been reignited and you should see enhancements again before too long.

Does anyone knows if the new version is able to compile WSI files with over 20.000 files? Has this 'bug' been fixed yet?

You should be able to find which bugs got fixed in which version in the Altiris Knowledge base.

Well today is Oct 29th and I can't find a download link. No mention on Symantec's website. No new licenses in the license portal. Looks like its going to be a boring day after all. [:-]

...except that at 15:23 in Europe, it's only 10:23 in California.

Even if it's "released" today, do you honestly expect the sloth-like Johnnies at Symantec to have it available for immediate download? Been dealing with Wise/Atiris/Symantec long? You'll get used to waiting. And waiting.

EDIT:
I officially retract my vicious calumny against sloths. They're positively gazelle-like compared to our Mountain View chums.

Met some nice guy who was lead packaging consultant @ Symantec and he was really doing all he could to make Wise Package Studio THE product to have for every packager. Wise Package Studio 8 might be just a small update in terms of functionality but watch out for the future. They are also watching the competitors closely. Applications like InstEdit have some nice features too for instance and Symantec just can't have it that others walk away because Symantec isn't innovating anymore with Wise.
So watch out for more. I have been using WPS for years and still love it.

The marketing at Symantec is not that good in my opinion. It is smart from them to tell everyone their products are Win7 compatible again (or are going to be in the near future) BUT that they don't have a single word about the new Wise Package Studio at their own site is really a pitty. Maybe a nice insider-blog would change a lot.
So my advise to Symantec: add a blog at the website which has insider-info and tips and tricks etc. where you write such info. That would certainly take attention to Wise Package Studio - and doesn't cost Symantec a lot of money in advertising.

It's clear to anybody with eyes that Symantec purchased Altiris purely to get its hands on their deployment technology in order to allow corporates to fully control the roll-outs of their anti-virus/anti-spyware products. WPS etc. came along as part of the deal. One fools one's self if one believes that Symantec have any great plans for WPS: it's not even a pin-prick on their road-map, given the installed base.

Whilst I wouldn't go so far as to say I love it, it is my packaging tool of choice.

As per usual, you gotta love Ian's comments... they're either entertaining or amusing [:D]

I was just speaking to my contact from Symantec, he's informed me that WPS 8.0 is supposedly slated for release around Christmas.

As for development of WPS, this is now being handled by a 3rd party.

Crikey! We'd better delete the copy we d/l from that link, then.

Actually, this is a slightly better link https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?_requestid=79585&a_id=88811& but for this one, you'll need to set up a SymAccount.

EDIT:
It seems Symantec agree with me, too: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/wise-package-studio-80-available#new
