What backup strategies does your company use?

Looking to see what backup solutions other companies have. We currently have about 6TB of live data that goes to tape. We all know backing up to tapes is slow and costly. We plan on purchasing another SAN. With more data having to be backed up, tapes will just be too slow. So, what kind of solutions do you guys have?

Thanks!

Data backup is always a case-by-case problem.  There is no one-size-fits-all solution.

At a previous company, we had about 1TB of live data.  Each night we did a full backup to tape which was saved for a week.  Each Friday tape was saved for 1 month.  The last tape of the month was permanently archived.  No disk backups, all tape.  Very cost effective compared to disk or cloud at the time, and once we were able to get a SAS tape drive it was relatively fast.

Currently we do backups to an EqualLogic SAN.  Super quick but remember there is a hefty up-front cost there.  Also does not address off-site backup which means eventually we will probably add another EqualLogic at another geographical location for disaster recovery purposes.

My $.02 to you would be to define your goals of what needs to be backed up with the most critical things prioritized.  Then analyze your current solution versus your dream solution.  Factor in your budget and you will likely compromise a bit unless you have unlimited funds.  Chances are that at the end of the day you will still be better off than you were had you not started to think about it.
