SoftGrid Licensing Question

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and new to the whole Application Virtualization thing. I am more familiar w/ Citrix.

My question is regarding Licensing as a whole (Windows CALs, TSCALs, SoftGrid Licenses, Application Licenses, etc.). As an example, what type of licenses will i need for a simple 5 user enviroment.

I understand that in Citrix a TS server is used, so we'll need a TSCAL for each user/device. Is it correct to assume this is the same for SoftGrid? If we don't use TS services, then we don't need the TSCALs correct?

That's about it for now, thanks.

SoftGrid has nothing to do with TS per se, so you are right, you don't need TSCALS to use softgrid app streaming - unless you are streaming to a TS server, of course. I'm thinking you are asking this to compare it to publishing apps with Citrix Presentation Server?

So to keep it simple, let's say we are not using TS at all. What are the licenses needed in a 5 user enviroment w/ SoftGrid?

My guess is 5 CALs, 5 SoftGrid user licenses, SoftGrid server license, and application licenses.

Microsoft integrated SoftGrid into their DOP (Desktop Optimization Package - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/optimizeddesktop.mspx) so I don't know if one can just buy 5 client licenses.

To my knowledge, their is no other licenses except for the SoftGrid client license and of course the application licenses you're sequencing.

Yes you can until this upcoming summer, you have to buy those licenses licenses through "old" SoftGrid channel. Start of July (around that time anyways), only SG desktop licenses available are ones included in DOPSA subscription. TS version of SG-client continues to be available with no SA tie-in.

No server licenses- just clients: DOP is about $10 per seat (but could be as low as $7) for Software Assurance customers only. The TS licenses are not part of DOP and go for $24 per client (again you could negotiate some kind of discount based on your relationship and how many you were looking for).
