Repackager - msi error 2705 when using multiple drives

For many reasons we have our hard drives split into 2 drives (C: for app data & D: for Windows). If I repackage a program that defaults to the normal installation path (in this case D:\Program Files\NewApp) and only scan changes on drive D: the msi is built correctly and will install without a problem. However, if change the location to c:\NewApp and change the scan to look at both C: and D: the msi is built without a problem. However, when we try to install using the new .msi it errors with code 2705.

Likewise if we install the program to the default drive D: but copy additional files we want available and included with the install over to drive C: (and C: is included in the scan) the .msi will error with 2705 during the install.

This is our only major stumbling block so far. We love the speed and sleekness!!!

Thanks,

Brian

The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2705.

The install location should be c:\pivot test

Below is the log file from the install.

Thanks for the details, we are investigating this situation. If you could post your XML project file using the file upload feature of the forum here it would be very helpful.

Thanks!

You got a lot of different C: paths structures in there which doesn't look good, should only be one.
Then it also seems you have captured an MSI.

The following Directory table (primary keys) entries seems to give you the error as the Directory column cannot contain a space:
Directory | Directory_Parent | DefaultDir
INTERNET EXPLORER | MICROSOFT | Internet Explorer
STICK FIGURES | PIVOT TEST | stick figures
PIVOT TEST | TARGETDIR | Pivot Test

Try removing the space from these (Directory.Directory) entries and make sure any Directory.Directory_Parent columns pointing to these also reference valid primary keys.

I am not understanding. I did not create the setup.exe. I am just trying to repackage it so I can run it silently and install the software on drive C: rather than the default drive D:. I attached the xml file from a repackage that works only scanning and installing on Drive D: (the windows system drive). The file structure is the same except for the TARGETDIR.

Sorry I'm not understanding.

Packaging isn't a walk in the park, you really need to know something about the Windows Installer technology.

However, it looks like everything is in the D drive according to the "SHELL32::SHGetFolderPath returned:" log lines.
ex.
SHELL32::SHGetFolderPath returned: D:\Documents and Settings\ms.installer\Application Data
SHELL32::SHGetFolderPath returned: D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
SHELL32::SHGetFolderPath returned: D:\WINDOWS\Fonts

Or what did you mean by "C: for app data"?

Packaging isn't totally foreign to me. I have been using AdminStudio for the last 2 years.

We use C: drive for some programs/data students need access to. With Group Policies drive D: is hidden and cannot be browsed. Some programs such as this one have templates or other data the student must access and because he/she is not able to browse drive D: we will install the software/data on drive C: for which they do have browse capability.

This software I am ttrying to repackage installs fine on either drive C: or D: and runs fine on either. I have repackaged using AdminStudio to capture the install on drive C: which also works fine. However, we would like to move away from AdminStudio and really like what you have here.

We have used AppDeploy repackager to repackage other software that was installed to drive D: only and it works fine. However, it doesn't seem to repackage properly when we install somewhere other than drive D: (or the windows system drive).

It appears to me the xml file is OK. The Repackager runs without any errors. But the .msi is corrupt.
Looking through the msi.log file it appears that repackager does not build the Directory tables in the .msi correctly when the files are installed on C: (not the root drive). Correct me if I am wrong, because I thought Repackager built these tables.

Brian,

The main problem I saw while compiling using your xml (skipping missing files) was that the Directory table contains invalid primary keys (identifier). So it seems that the repackager creates some incorrect Directory table entries.

Could you attach your MSI without any included cabinets?

Bob,
Could you check how it handles the creation of Directory table entries.

The problem is almost certainly the AppDeploy Repackager. While we did consider this scenario it probably didn't see a lot of testing. Your discussion here will be very helpful in our getting it corrected quickly. I can't promise how soon I can have a new build ready, but I'm working to see it happens as soon as possible.

Thank you both!

I tried to extract the .cab file using
msidb -d "\\nas\sw$\Pivot\TEST C\PivotStickfigureAnimator.msi" -x MSIProject.cab and I get a failed to open database pop-up.

So then I tried to list the cab files using
cscript WIStream.vbs "\\nas\sw$\Pivot\TEST C\PivotStickfigureAnimator.msi" and I get the following output:
Microsoft (R) Windows Script Host Version 5.7
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Msi API Error 80004005: OpenDatabase,DatabasePath,OpenMode
1: 2203 2:
\\nas\sw$\Pivot\TEST C\PivotStickfigureAnimator.msi 3: -2147287008

Is there something else I can do?

Thanks,

Brian

Download InstEd from www.instedit.com, similar to ORCA and delete the stream from the _Streams table.
Save it and attach it.

I assume it was OK to add .txt to the name in order to attach it.

When I deleted the entries in the _streams table and save the file, the size did not change (almost as if the .cab files were empty). The file size of this file was 513Kb and the size of the file that works is 532Kb.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Thanks,

Brian

Add the Directory entry
(no value for the Directory_Parent column)
C_DRIVE C:\

Then change the below existing Directory table entries (from -> to):
From: PIVOT STICKFIGURE ANIMATOR C: Pivot Stickfigure Animator
To: PIVOT_STICKFIGURE_ANIMATOR C_DRIVE Pivot Stickfigure Animator
From: STICK FIGURES PIVOT STICKFIGURE ANIMATOR stick figures
To: STICK_FIGURES PIVOT_STICKFIGURE_ANIMATOR stick figures
From: ALPHABET STICK_FIGURES alphabet
To: ANIMATIONS PIVOT_STICKFIGURE_ANIMATOR animations

Change the Component.Directory_ column for the below components as follow:
PIVOT.EXECOMP {E9DFD554-9C17-46C8-9F5A-5C8400024146} PIVOT_STICKFIGURE_ANIMATOR 8

Bob,

Where does the ISAssistantTag, ISCustomActionReference and InstallShield tables come from?
Why include the MsiPatchCertificate, MsiPatchHeaders, MsiPatchMetadata, MsiPatchOldAssemblyFile, MsiPatchOldAssemblyName and MsiPatchSequence tables?

The MSI is built based on a "blank" MSI included in the installation. It looks like this extra junk was overlooked.

Thanks,
Bob

Can you guys verify what version of the AppDeploy Repackager you are using? We are not able to reproduce the problem on anything newer than the Beta 2 release. Could it be as easy as downloading the latest and trying again?

Will try a new download.

Downloaded Repackager.msi again and that fixed the problem. Noticed the Icon for Repackager is different also. The old one was blue with logo from your web site. The new is a light brown box (aka package).

Don't know what happened to the original .msi (I had reinstalled it once or twice).

Thanks so much for your help!!!!

Pressing on.

The beta releases were not labeled as beta in the application. A good indicator is the "package" application icon (versus the lower resolution AppDeploy logo icon). If you downloaded after November 15th you should have the latest.

I downloaded version 1.0 (released 11/15/2008) again, opened "PivotTest_2.2.5.0.xml" attached in this thread and almost got the same result this time; Invalid Directory.Directory primary key for:
PIVOT TEST | TARGETDIR | Pivot Test
STICK FIGURES | PIVOT TEST | stick figures
INTERNET EXPLORER | MICROSOFT | Internet Explorer

However, there was no "C:" value as Directory.Directory_Parent anymore.

There was a breaking change in the alpha version where the XML file was created (it used to list full paths to all files individually where it now lists files in directory nodes). If you create a new snapshot you should see it works fine. The next release will do a much better job of identifying versions of the repackager and the XML files it creates.
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
