Referrers Field in HelpDesk

Does anyone know what the referrers field is, what's it's supposed to be for, and why it's not usuable?

When using the "See Also" field to link to related ticket numbers, it causes those related tickets to have an entry back to the referring ticket. I use the "See Also" field a lot so can jump from a ticket to a related one and then get back to the first ticket by clicking the resultant link in the "Referrers" field.
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
