Problem Repackaging Scanjet 8350 software

Hi,

Having a problem repackaging the software (drivers and TWAIN) for this scanner. I can't find out how to perform a silent installation(/s etc with the setup.exe does nothing)

As a result I have had to use setupcapture to create an MSI. I am intending to run dpinst.exe from a custom action to install the drivers, but for the moment I am using a user with admin rights to manually install the drivers.

The problem is this: When scanning from the document feeder, there is a 15 second pause between each sheet being fed through. When the software is installed from directly from the CD this does not happen, the sheets feed through continously. I have checked all the settings etc and cannot find any difference between the CD and msi installations.

It seems that there is something that I have not captured that is causing this to happen, but I cannot work out what it could be.

Has anyone got experience with repackaging the software for this scanner? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

James Rae

Hi James,
The setup.exe is a wrapper around a hole bunch of msi-installations. Start the setup.exe and wait until the first dialog comes up. Go to the current users temp folder and look for the folders most recently created. In one of them lies the unzipped version of the installation. You can save this folder to another location now. This is the same exploded directory structure you get with the installtion CD. In there you have the drivers with the inf and cat files. If you really need to make your own MSI-Installer, use those to DIFx the drivers.
All the sub apps have their own MSI-Installers which you can use to install them quiet.
Most of the HP-Software for their scanners and multifunction devices are constructed like this. Some of them have problems with user rights which prevents some of the apps to run under ordinary user rights.
Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the advice, have tried following the steps you suggested, but whatever method we try that does not run the full setup frontend app results in the scanner pausing between sheets. It is very strange...... Maybe it is passing some property to the rest of the installation process.

I have been on to HP about this and they just responded with "this software is not designed for remote installation".

Looks like we will need to find another scanner!

Thanks again for the advice.

Hi James,
could this be a language/region issue? In some EU country (maybe all) there are different levels of royalty fees for scanning devices, depending on the speed. Most scanners perform a lot faster with the US-English version of the drivers/software.
Look for the 1033 language transforms, especially with 'hpg8300.msi'. Install it with msiexec /i hpg8300.msi TRANSFORMS=1033.mst.
Maybe this gives you another result.
Another thing could be, that you are actually not using the HP-driver but the XP-WIA-drivers.
HP-Software/drivers for MF-/ imaging-devices are really a mess. Other vendors like epson or brother need 5-20MB of drivers instead oft HP's hundred’s of MB for the same or better functionality. That's, why i don't buy such stuff from this company anymore since around 2 years.
