Order of self-registration

I would like to bring up another issue - also regarding my dilemma with dublicate registry entries in my captures. I seem to have capsulated my dilemma to using Smartmonitor (and without Smartmonitor it won't capture an eventual order of DLL or OCX registration).

My question is quite simple: How do you know if the application you're capturing needs its systemfiles's to be registrered in a specific order?

Please do not hesitate to share your experience on this issue as it seems to have an impact on some captured installations stability whether its files are registrered in a specific order. I dealt with issue myself a couple of months ago when i had a faulty application returned from some of our users, and it took me quite a while to realize that it in fact was a matter of registering the DLL's and OCX's in a specific order.

Unfortunately, there's no easy way of knowing in advance...

This should only be an issue if you use the "Selfreg" table (not recommended by MS). Capturing the registration as registry/advertising information should circumvent the problem.

I figured there wasn't ... which leaves me with ... AppDeploy and some great in-depth discussions ;-)

I've been digging into this issue all weekend and also read some of MSIMakers old postings about Self-registration, and it makes sense why this isn't a solid approach, but i guess i still need to find the link between self-registrering and registrering in a certain order... i certainly do NOT like the approach leaving registry entries as-is which also will circumcent company policy - and me being slain as a non-believer ;-)

Thanks for your input WiseUser, i've read many of your postings with great interest !
