MSI failing to install when launching MSI alone

I have a vendor MSI that is failing when launching to install the app. Previous MSI version installs without issue. When launching directly from the MSI, I am getting an error stating that it cannot find a file and shows the file path being the one from where I am initiating the MSI install. In other words, if I place the MSI on the desktop and install from there, an error message pops up stating:

 

“ Error 1309. Error reading from file: C:\Users\username\Desktop\WinRoot\Account Ability\...\setup.exe.    Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.”

 

It doesn’t matter where I place the MSI, it returns the error with the path from where the MSI was launched. I would like to know what is causing this and of course, how it can be fixed. I can only use an Installshield transform for making any behavior changes for the MSI and am not able to make any changes to the vendor MSI, can only be done through transform. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Post your log file to pate bin or something similar.

Is this a Installshield type setup.exe before modifications etc? If so does the setup.exe work ok on a clean machine? 

I think this an error introduced by packaging, vendor installers are ok most of the time.

You need to ZIP the installation log and attach it, as it's missing all the important bits.  Search the log for "Return Value 3" which often occurs near the point of the actual error. Do you know (eg from the property table) what packaging tool was used to create the vendor MSI?  For example, until relatively recently, any MSI created with Installshield Adminstudio required a specific version of ISSetup.msi to be installed first, and this was done by the EXE itself, before launching the internal MSI for the main install. 
So what you need to do is to clear out all the crap in your temp folders, run the vendor EXE and then look for an ISSetup.msi being extracted into the temp area.  Or you can check the MSI installs in the c:\windows\installer hidden folder for new entries after your vendor exe is installed.  On Windows 7 and later operating systems, the entire MSI is cached in these folders so you can also harvest from there.

Never, EVER use ANY user Desktop to host installation media! For starters, when your actual user starts the app and it needs to self-heal, that user's account won't have access to the original media (because it's on some other user's Desktop) and will fail. Generally, I use the folder that the client's deployment system uses, e.g. SCCM's 'CCMCache' folder.

Like other guys already mentioned - full log file is required to get more details.

In the meantime you can try to catch MSI installation command line when it is launched via vendor's setup.exe. It seems that MSI is looking for the main setup.exe file - I experienced similiar issue when I had to pass SETUPEXEDIR or SETUEXEPATH property.
Additionally you can compare MSI installation log files, especially the final part where all properties are listed.

To catch the command line you can use ProcMon.

There is still some possibility that setup.exe extracts some additional files that are not part of the MSI so then you would need to capture them and include with MST.

In such cases, usually there would be a property ISSETUPDRIVEN. Set that to 0.
Also, are you running this as yourself or system? (Usually any deployment tool will run the app as SYSTEM). That will give you a fair idea of where the issue is
