Moving to VM

Since our physical servers will be out of support soon, I'm thinking to move to VM and I have some questions need your helps.

What is best way to do that and anyone have done before?

What are the risks?

Any suggestions and recommendations?

Thanks in advanced....

  • I had the same concerns when we were in the same scenario that you are. I kept the physical appliance up for 2 weeks after we went to VM but everything worked fine and the support that I received during the transition was very good. Just beware that if your VM admin likes to keep things up to date at all times that they make sure the version of Kace you are on can support the version of VM tools. Our admin updated the tools and brought the SMA down and it took rebuilding the VM and restoring from backup to get it back up and running. The downside was once we were back up and running he did the upgrade again and of course we had the same thing happen. Other than that we have been VM for 2+ years now and have had no issues with it. - scarpent 4 years ago
    • the KACE appliances handle the openvmtools by themselves. (since SMA 8 and SDA 5 imho) - Nico_K 4 years ago
  • Nico_K we were on a version of 8 and when the admin updated the tools it didn't go well for us and we had to involve support to help us get back up and running and only know what they said caused the crash and since it happened a 2nd time am inclined to believe support - with that being said not going to say our environment may have been part of the problem also - scarpent 4 years ago

Hi Ghamdifast,

this is a common scenario. Feel free to contact you local sales rep for professional services which can assist you with this task. Otherwise you can easily use the backup and restore function for SMA and the migration wizard for SDA to move to a virtual environment.

SMA: https://support.quest.com/kace-systems-management-appliance/kb/119863/how-to-migrate-database-between-multiple-smas-k1000s-

SDA: https://support.quest.com/kace-systems-deployment-appliance/kb/263598/kace-kontinuing-education-kke-recording-what-s-new-sda-6-1-appliance-migration

Kind Regards

Some key points.

* The source SMA and destination SMA need to be running the same version to be able to restore the backup files.

* The destination SMA should be configured with the required amount of resources for your environment.  CPU's, Memory...etc
