Monitor connected to Surface Pro 3 Dock

I've had an issue for the past few weeks, when I connect my surface pro 3(running Win 8.1 64 bit) I am not able to see the desktop on an external monitor.  I have tried it on a Dell 2213 and an Acer monitor and nothing comes up.  I have updated the drivers for the Intel HD 5000 graphics card and now instead of just a dark screen, it's lighter now and I see an arrow however it can't move.  Anything else I plug into the docking station is able to work on the machine such as keyboard, mouse or thumb drives.  I have changed the monitor cables and power cables on the monitor just in case as well

is there anything other than a restore that I can try?  Thanks much.

Are there any drivers for the monitor available?  Have you gone into control panel and checked if the second screen has been detected?
