KACE2000 v.3.6 - USMT 5.0 - Windows XP to Windows 8.1 upgrade

hi, there,

I am new to KACE2000 v3.6 and USMT and was assigned a task to investigate using USMT to migrate user profiles and data.

Using USMT template, I can scan Windows 7 machine's profile and data, but can't scan any Windows XP ones. Checked the document, it says USMT 5.0, usually bundled with ADK8.1 doesn't support scanning user states from Windows XP and Windows Vista computers.

I am wondering if there is a workaround, or any body has successfully using KACE USMT to upgrade systems from Windows XP directly to Windows 8.1.

Any suggestion is welcome!

  • I did use USMT on K2000, and created a USMT template, and use it to scan the user states. It can only collect Windows 7 machine's user state, but not the XP machine. I really don't have to downgrade to USMT 4 to migrate to Windows 7 and then USMT 5 to migrate to windows 8. Is there anything else I can try? - richardli 9 years ago

To go from xp to 8.1 is a 2 step migration.  You need a dummy windows 7 machine and use windows easy transfer to update the xp profiles to win 7 then you can take those to win 8.1.

  • Kace USMT incorporates microsofts USMT apps to do the task. If you want to research more look into scanstate and loadstate apps - SMal.tmcc 9 years ago

    • download windows easy transfer and do the xp to win7 manually then use the k2000 to grab the profiles from the win7 machine

      • thanks, SMal.tmcc, but that won't help me much. I have more than 200 systems to be upgraded within several months and can't do it manually on each machine. yes, we have K1000. - richardli 9 years ago
      • do you have a k1000? - SMal.tmcc 9 years ago
      • I just remembered helping this ninja with these scripts a while back. this way you can run usmt 4 from a share and not mess with the k2000 usmt 5 install.

You can upload 3.0 from within the K2000.  From within the K2000 go to Library>UserStates>Choose Action, Upload USMT Software, Click on Show me instructions,Click the download link under step 1 for 32 bit, step three browse to thedownload msi file, Click on Upload USMT 3.0.1 and it should work

Thanks, SMal, my colleague and I found the solution. USMT 5 with ADT8.0 can scan state XP user state, but XP needs to have .net framework 4.0. We used k1000 to install .net 4.0 on XP machine and we successfully scan and later load state on Windows 8.1 machines.

currently we are working one minor issues, like the Outlook signature wasn't properly copied etc. Just keep you guys updated.
