if we need to add some files like exe e.g. calc.exe & text files into MST it's best practice to create feature then add those files or directly add files into program folder? (admin studio)

Yes, best way is to create feature then component after that you can add the necessary files to the component.

Adding to rvprasad's answer, creating feature-component-files and making them keypaths has an added advantage with the shortcut in the same feature where if any keypath is missing, on shortcut launch it will bring back the missing. - Sujit J 10 years ago
There is no "best practice" for something like this but most people would create a separate feature, if only to be able to easily differentiate what's been added from what exists in the package already.
Remember: if the files are targetted at the user's profile, you will need to build the feature tree such that self-healing is triggered. Of course, you will by now have read up on self-healing, having been entreated to last week....[holds breath...] - anonymous_9363 10 years ago
