KACE Product Support Question

Has anyone managed to capture a Windows 10 1607 image?

03/22/2017 1376 views
I am trying to setup and capture a 1607 image for deployment and am consistently having issues with getting it ready for capture.

Firstly, I am creating the golden image in a vSphere VM container and want to capture Windows for UEFI deployments.  I ran through the DiskUtil commands to get the drive ready and then installed Win 10 x64 N Enterprise from the iso from MS.

I turn off every setup option and also the Windows Updates sharing option (as well as Defender)

Biggest initial issue is that Windows Updates just fail.  They stay at 0% for a long time and eventually seem to start downloading but later they just fail.

I tried just ignoring the updates and then just tried using the Sysprep tool to get it ready for capture but the sysprep tool kept failing also.

I know that this is a "Microsoft" issue, but there must be people out there deploying 1607.  I am at the point of paying Quest a few grand to just get an image captured and ready for deployment because this just isn't working and I have paid for the licenses that basically can't be used because it's lovely to have a deployment system, but with no image to deploy it is just an expensive paperweight.

  • What kinds of errors are you seeing in the logs? Both for the windows updates failing and then sysprep?
  • I followed best practice for GoldenImage, dont forget to upgrade KBE/ADK/WIM/PE10 for Windows 10 v.1607
  • Well, I started from scratch again and it seems to be working fine now.

My Windows 10 Golden Master still won't pull any updates though. I just want to get an image deployed so will work with the un-updated 1607 image for now. It's a VM so I can always update and recapture it later once I have the rest of the process down.
  • You can wait until next week and try the 1703 version to see if that solves any of your issues as well.
    • What? Wait until next tuesday?
      • I heard that 1703 is getting released 4/10/2017. Not that anything posted on the internet could be false. :)
  • Correction to my last comment. Release date is set for 4/11/2017
