Software Deployment Question

Driver installation by means of Visual Studio Installer (6)

11/16/2007 4492 views
I have got problems with the installation of some drivers that an electronic device needs to work correctly.
I have made an application with Visual Basic 6.0, and it uses an external device just to communicate by means of it. This device as i have said before brings its own drivers (.inf, .cat, .sys, .dll). I have been reading in this forum posts that are related with this issue, but, even if i review it once and again, i can't do an installator that installs at the same time the drivers and the application.
I have used the DIFxApp merge module, but in Visual Studio Installer i do not know how to add the files to that merge module...
I want to install the hardware and the software in one step, without the need of installing it manually...can anyone help me and say to me more or less how to solve this problem?

I have also been using Wise Package Studio...and Installshield Proffesional 2008(trial versions. I have used them because they can open a vb6 project and locate all the dependences...), but i don't know how to create a global installator that includes the hardware automatic installation by means of the DIFxApp... :-(

Any help is going to be wellcome...

Thank you very much!

If the device driver is of PnP type then you will be able to use the DIFxApp merge module.
You should also verify that the .CAT file has been signed.

To do this in WPS you just:
add the driver related files as regular files
make sure the .inf file is set as keypath for the component
add the DIFxApp.msm
double-click the .inf file, go to the Driver tab and tick the first checkbox (and others if you want)
