Difference between qr and qn when installing patch after software

I'm trying to run an installation manually. There is a patch that must be installed after the software itself. When i have the patch's user interface parameters set to qn the installation fails with a 1603 error but when i have the parameters set to qr it installs fine. Any reason why this might be?

Make sure you have passed REINSTALL=ALL property when you install patch with /qn

the /q switch sets the UI level.

/qn = no ui

/qr = reduced ui a modal dialog is displayed at the end of install

There is an action running in InstallUISequence which is not in InstallExecuteSequence table which determines a successfull installations.
