Deploying Acrobat 6.0 Professional with GPO's

I have used the the InstallShield Tuner 6.0 for Adobe Acrobat to create an mst that I want to use to deploy this app with GPO's. Problem is when I try to publish the msi, it errors out?

Whats up guys?

Thanks!

I think we'll need a bit more information than that to help you out ;)

Does it work from the command line?
Be sure the MST is specified and available (check the path and security).
What does the error log say?
For more detailed information about the failure, click here to see how you can turn on MSI logging.

Well, when you try to open up the MSI from with the GPO, it errors out. It does work from the cmd line. I will get the exact error message, and the event log error as soon as I can.

Thanks,

Sounds like I'm getting the same error.
When I try to deploy the Acrostan.msi from Adobe I get the message that " Add operation failed. Unable to extract deployment information from the package. Run validation on the package to ensure that the package is correct."
I can install it using the MSIEXEC command and a transform, and it doesn't appear to have any serious errors when I look at it in WPS.
Has anyone else worked with this ?

I've seen this in two cases:

1) The machine you are using to add the package to the group policy object does not have the version of Windows Installer that the package was created with. For example if you have a v2.0 package and try to add it to group policy using a machine that has v1.1, it will not be able to read the package and you will see this error.

2) The machine you are using to add the package to the group policy object already has the package installed. In this case, the system may get a "repair/reinstall" code back when it goes to read the MSI, instead of the information it is looking for, which will also generate this error.

Make sure you have the latest Windows Installer, and if you have the package installed on your machine- remove it first or use another workstation/server.

Let me know if this information helps or does not help in your situation.

I'm on a clean pc with Windows XP so I don't think either of those causes apply.
I'd like to know if this works for anyone or if it is another Adobe issue.

I checked the event log and found out some thing interesting:

Product: Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard -- This installation type is not supported in this version. Setup will now terminate.

Is there a work around to this ?

I have tried with 3 diffrent loggins and passwords to get InstallShield Tuner 6.0 for Adobe Acrobat and have given up. Adobe tells me if I'm having trouble to get a new login.

I have gone and bought wise for windows installer, I have manipulated the app so that none of the windows show, but now I can't seemt oget the licence key.

After the install finnishes I run the app and after the splash screen i get " no valid licence found, adobe will now quit".

Does anyone have any ideas ?

The Package Knowledge Base entry for Acrobat mentions an FTP link:

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/6.0

Good luck!

I used WPS to create a transform that has the license code in it. On the properties page there is a property called ISX_SERIALNUMBER . It's value should be your license serial number.

Has anybody successfully been able to add this MSI to a GPO and if so, how??

I've created the MST via Tuner 6.0 and it does work from the command line. I've checked the MST in AdminStudio 5 and the ISX_SERIALNUMBER does contain my serial number and I still get the following error in my Application Log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1013
Date: 11/11/2003
Time: 7:47:51 AM
User: N/A
Computer: AKRCA67224073
Description:
Product: Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard -- This installation type is not supported in this version. Setup will now terminate.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I've spoken with Adobe support (because they support install issues for free) and when I mentioned Acrobat 6.0 and AD he started to get very rude with me. No matter what I said, he simply responded that Adobe doesn't support AD and that's that. Eventually I made him hang up on me and now I don't think I can call them anymore.

I went to the FTP site today and noticed that the Tuner download is gone. Maybe InstallShield got mad that they were distributing it?? Anyway, is there anybody out there that's done this successfully without repackaging?? I hate to destroy the logic of the MSI without cause even though there doesn't appear to be much logic there[:D]

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. DB.

Well that sure is frustrating! I don't know what is up with the Tuner link, but they worked with InstallShield to make it available, so it was there legitimately.

Do you have a verbose installer log? See this link for how to turn on logging, it is likely to provide much better information than the event log:

Bob,
Thanks for the quick reply. I can send you the verbose log, but it's from my manual install. There is no log file other then what I sent from the Application log when you attempt to add an MSI to Group Policy. Do you want me to sne dyou the verbose log from a manual install?? Thanks. DB.

By setting this value in the registry, all MSI packages that install will produce a log (including those via GPO). Becuase you really cannot see what is happening during a GPO installation, this log is invaluable. I don't need the whole thing, just set the value in the registry, push the MSI to the box and let it fail, then open the log file and do a search for ERROR- that will be the helpful information. You should see an actual internal MSI error number that will let us know exactly what is going wrong.

Bob,
Sorry about that. I looked at the FAQ and this is something I've never seen before. Just a little case of foot-in-mouth[:D]

Anyway, it looks like it's verbose logging for the service itself and that's really cool. Where does it store the log file?? In System32\LogFiles?? Anyway, I'll let you know here in a minute. Thanks. DB.

BTW: VERY cool board... It has some very cool features.

No problem; the log file should appear in %TEMP% or possibly %WINDIR%/temp

Bob,
Anyone ever tell you you're a smart guy... No really, all this time and I had no idea what those MSIxxxxx.LOG files were. I even have a setting in my base group policy that enables basic logging but I didn't realize the logs were stored in %TEMP%. Anyway, I guess I'll just paste the log file in below as I can't seem to attach a file so here goes:

It seems that the MSI somehow advises the Windows Installer service that the Advertise mode is not available. I'm not sure what I can do about this but I assure you Adobe's not about to fix it soon. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks. DB.

Flattery will get you everywhere...

First off, you should be Assigning the MSI to a machine (which I believe you are) as this is the method I have seen work. Ensure the system account has sufficient access to the computer. While it may be unrelated, a problem I have seen pushing an MSI by GPO when it worked fine from the command line was error 1603- check this out as another potential area for problems.

Also, when registering Acrostan.msi there are a couple of errors that may help you in identifying the issue:

2729 - Install engine not initialized.
This may simply be a result of the MSI aborting

2262 - Stream does not exist: "AdminProperties". System error: "-2147287038".
Take a look in the MSI tables for "AdminProperties" this may be a component name, and could shed more light on the problem.

1402 - Could not open key: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MS Setup (ACME)\User Info". System error 2 (The system cannot find the file specified.)
This last one shows up twice when dealing with a missing MSCOREE.DLL, which is the MS .NET runtime DLL. I don't know why Adobe's package would be looking for this (I am not aware of this being a .NET application) but as a troubleshooting measure, I would try installing the latest .NET runtime to eliminate it as a potential problem.

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem deploying Adobe Reader 6.0 through Group Policy. I have the MSI package and the transform exactly how I want it. It will install great through the command line, but when I assign the package to the Computer in a policy it will not install via document invocation. If I check the properties on "Software Installation" and go to the "File Extensions" tab there are no extentions listed. So I guess my question is: How do I get the file extensions to associate with this package so it will automatically install when a file with a .pdf or .fdf is double clicked on the desktop? Is this a package issue or a Group Policy issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, I've just about had it with Adobe right about now. I've got every last bit of software for the entire company being deployed by GPO's right now except Acrobat 6.0 Standard. I don't know what kind of crack Adobe was smoking when they made an MSI file that won't work with GPO's, but right now I wish I could wring the neck of whoever made that decision.

Here's the goal, and I'm sure it's one everyone can understand: I want to push out Acrobat 6.0 Standard to a large number of PC's using GPO's. I don't have SMS or Tivoli. Login scripts are not an option because (a) my users do not have software installation rights on their local PC's and (b) Acrobat 6.0 requires admin rights to install. It seems Adobe just doesn't care about those of us who don't have the cash to pay for SMS or Tivoli.

There are a number of workarounds to be found in the Packages forums. I've actually doctored the MSI (based on the instructions provided by kheinrich) and managed to get the GPO to accept the doctored MSI package. The problem now is that certain registry keys must be set in order to make this modified MSI actually work after installation. Well, I can't push out registry keys becase -- drum roll please -- my users don't have local admin privileges and thus cannot modify the registry. That rules out distribution via login scripts (which run with local user permissions only), and offhand I don't know of another way to push keys out.

I've considered repackaging the MSI, but I'd prefer some other method if at all possible. There are lots of downsides to repackaging MSI's, not the least of which is that Adobe doesn't support it.

I've considered deploying this as a .ZAP package using the SETUP.EXE with command line arguments. However, my experience with making .ZAP files is nil. I tried following the instructions on Microsoft's site, but the resulting file would not import into the GPO. I have, however, used the Tuner for Acrobat 6.0 program from Adobe to generate a proper MST transform. Now if only the GPO would import it...

Anyone out there want to give some advice? Has anyone found a way to do this that doesn't involve repackaging or editing the MSI?

OK,
Some time ago (back around my original post) something in my conversation with Bob sparked the answer (I just don't remember right away what it was). Using the Windows Installer verbose logging registry key led me down the path that there was no advertise sequence in the MSI. I ended up using AdminStudio to actually add an advertise sequence to the MSI using steps from the other spots. If you'd like, send me an email directly and we can compare views of the MSI over the phone or something.

Don't despair, there is a way. I'm doing it right now via GPO. It installed on my machine this morning when I booted it up. Thanks. DB.

Assuming the package is being assigned to a computer, the presence of advertising information should not be an issue. It could be the culprit if you are trying to advertise it to a user or group of users (where the shortcut is installed, and the entire application is installed due to the absence of key files).

A thought on pushing the registry entries- I'm not sure of the tools you have available to you, but if you create a transform file for the Adobe MSI you may include the registry keys in your initial deployment. Don't use InstallTailor or Tuner, just create a new MST in the MSI Editor and specify the Adobe MSI. From this point, you should see the Adobe MSI elements and any changes you make are saved to the MST instead of modifying the Adobe MSI directly.

In addition to all other adobe professional problems i have got another one. All our software is being installed in Dutch. De dutch version of Acrobat Professional is in fact one msi with three languages: danish, dutch en swedish. I also got the same GPO issues like JCasale and 79TransAm. If i run it from the commandline like this: msiexec /i acrorpo.msi TRANSFORMS=acropro.mst;acropro6.mst (where acropro6.mst is our customized one) it works but will install in danish cause that appears to be the default langauge. How can i make sure it works through gpo and that it will be in dutch?

Thanks in advance

Well, I experience the same problem with the languages. I want it installed i Swedish though. Cant find anywhere in the mst file to change this.
I´ve found a few things that might be someway interresting but I'm not shure, from the mst file...
LANG_SEL_DEFAULT=ENU
ProductLanguage=1030
REGIONAL_LIST=DAN

Im quite new to this, so if there is any help it would be very nice...

I found the properties you named ealier in the Property Table via Orca. I changed the ProductLanguage one into the dutch lcid 1043 and ran the installation again by just doubleclick the msi-file. Userinterface still was in Danish, but when finished I started the application and that one was in Dutch. Now i only need to deploy it through gpo though.

Dennis and Petri,
It sounds like both of you are having the same problem in that there is no Advertise section of the MSI defined. In order to create this, you'll have to directly edit the MSI (as Adobe has written it incorrectly). I used AdminStudio to edit the MSI, define the advertise section and it will atomatically create the basic steps. Leave them at their default and the MSI should now publish via GPO. Please let me know if you have any other problems. Thanks. DB.

Hi, I have had the same problems and I want to try your solution, but I do not know the adminstudio program that well.

can you give a more precise description how to do it?
what part of the admin studio shall i use? developer?

thanks /Kenneth

Ken,

Dennis Brands and I (earlier in this thread) are working on reconstructing what I originally did to cause the Adobe MSI to work correctly. I do not yet have a step-by-step scenario for modifying the MSI to support the advertised sequence (since Adobe failed to do so originally) but are working toward that goal. Dennis is on the other side of the planet from me though so it has taken some time. He or I will post to this thread when we've discovered the solution. Thanks. DB.

Ok, so I've been having the same problem as everyone mentioned above. Now, the problem lies in that Adobe, in there infinite wisdom, has limited the installation by using the "UnSupportedInstallType" custom action. If you notice, it seems to be implemented everywhere they don't want you to use (this includes simply adding the msi to a GPO for installation). By opening the msi in AdminStudio DevStudio and going to the Sequences area listed under "Behavior and Logic", you can remove those stupid UnSupportedInstallType from the Sequence. To add the MSI to a GPO you need to remove the UnsupportedInstallType from the Advertisement Sequence (and then in Execute). Now, I DO NOT KNOW if the install will work yet. But I should know in the next 30 mins, and I'll post back

WEEHAW!!

That's all you have to do. Remove the "UnSupportedInstallType" custom action in the Advertisement Sequence (the Execute Branch), add the new MSI to your GPO, add your MST with serial number to the GPO, deploy, and you're done. Now, on to Adobe's wonderful CS products...

That is almost exactly what I did. Dennis Brands and I figured out that I had set the UnSupportedInstallType to 0 instead of 1. But that's all. Thanks for the clarification rebelpeon. You're now the new unofficial Adobe support person:-) I pass the torch to you... Thanks. DB.

Sorry for responding this late but I was in bed whole week being ill so I couldnt test any further. I tried your solution as well rebelpeon but that one didnt work for me unfortunatly ... probably because of the different languages in one msi. Ill try again monday and let you guys know ...

Have a nice weekend,

Hi all

I am having a problem with Adobe Acrobat Pro, once I have created a mst and run it. It installs fine. But once I got to run the program is errors saying something about a EXE error and it closes. Before it closes it shows the splash screen of Adobe Acrobat 6.

I'm new to this forum, but not new when it comes to packaging :P

Alrighty! I'm so close to getting this thing to work its now driving me INSANE. This is what I've done so far...

1. Took the acrostan.msi and modified as per rebelpeon's instructions. I've removed the "UnSupportedInstallType" custom action from the Advertisement sequence using Installshield Developer.

2. Created an mst file that sets the ISX_SERIALNUM Property to the serial number. I won't post it here for obvious reasons...

3. Made the OU, made the GP, (Acrobat adds fine to the GP with no errors, thankyou rebelpeon). Reboot the machine, thing starts installing and bombs out.

I can't find off in this log file. Hopefully someone with a bit more experience or know how could help :)

I've tried deploying this this thing without the mst I created, still no luck. I even tried making an administrative installation out of the thing and then installing based on that, still no luck.

I just found these forums and look to be a valuable tool, think I will stick around :)

Thanks in advance.

Got it!

The problem was that I was using Installshield Tuner that came with my copy of Adminstudio. I should have been using the Tuner that Adobe gives away for free :o

Once I used their free copy of Tuner, everything worked!

Thanks!

I'm going to give Adobe's Tuner one more try with the fixes everyone mentioned above.

I tried using both Install Shield and Wise removing the custom actions and adding the license/registry keys in the MST with no luck.

We use ZENworks to deploy MSI/MST packages vs Group Policy but have the same issues as you have all mentioned. Everything works great manually from the run line but once inside ZEN, eventviewer gives me the invalid serial number error and it hangs.

I'll let you know! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Thats the same problem I am getting imbrod00, let me know if you get it working.

I will do the same, If I get it sorted too

The invalid serial number error? That was exactly what I was getting. Here are the basics of what I did to get the thing to deploy correctly. BTW, I only used developer to hack the MSI for GP deployment. Only the tuner that Adobe supplied for free was what I used to create the MST.

Got Acrobat, used Adobe Tuner to create my MST file, hacked the original MSI to allow GP deployment, deploy to machines (not users) and I'm done.

Don't forget, ITS REALLY IMPORTANT TO APPLY THE MST FILES IN THE CORRECT ORDER. My copy of Acrobat Standard came with an MST already. I made another one to hold the serial number and such. So MSI, plus two MST files, deployed to machines, done.

I have got It working now, Its a kinda of hack job but it work. What I did was use Wise's InstallTailor to create a MST file. This will hold the Serial number. Then I opened up the MSI that came with Adobe and converted it in a WSI, then from there I created a new MSI from the WSI. In the MSI I took out the two custom actions that was mentioned above some where. Also I took out the shortcuts that I didnt need.

I put it AD and it works fine. The next thing though is to disable the Register bit that loads up when you first run Adobe.[:@]

Any idea people

Hey gunner

I had the same problem with the registration dialog.

Adobe has provided there own MST and with the Adobe provided Tuner you can make your own, where is was supposed that the registration should be turned off but I could not get that part to work.

Then I provided the following registry setting.

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\6.0\Registration]
"PRODREG"=dword:65686669

How ever I don't know if it is only borrowed time and the Dialog will pop up again later.

Gunner, to disable the register bit, simply use the Tuner that Adobe supplies for free. Make sure to read up on the PDF that comes with it as it shows you step by step how to modify the program. Its only like 15 pages.

That was kind of a round about way to get it working for ya...but whatever works I guess. I always believe in doing the least amount of work possible in getting things to work :P

Here is the state of play for me so far people. I have seem to get it working, I have tried that method Sweede suggested and it worked when I installed the product and changed the registry afterwards. Before I run Adobe. But when I add the registry line in to wise and then install the it, it doesnt work.

Strange piece of s/w, unless i am doing something seriously wrong. I have spent too much time on this. Plus i have other s/w to do.[:(]

Import current registry entries related to Reader into an MST file after you manually installed it and customized the settings. The problem is the users don't have access to all sections in the registry to make the appropriate changes.

For example, the prompt for acceptance of user licence agreement:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\6.0\AdobeViewer]
"EULA"=dword:00000001

I have got it working, and it install through GP and uninstalls ok. The only thing is that it comes up with the register software when you first run it. All the user has to do is say later to it.

What I did was to open the MSI that is comes with and to convert it in to a WSI, Then convert the WSI to a MSI. And then use a MST to add in the serial number. Its a bit longer way around it but it worked. I think that is what I did, it was a little while back, and since then I have been put on other projects. [:o]

Hi everyone,

I'm having a real problem with Adobe Professional 6.0. When i install through GPO it installs fine until it starts installing a printer. Then it comes up with an adobe error 20225. If i get gpo to install it though assigning it installs fine, but when publishing it screws up! Has anyone got any ideas.......cheers in advance from someone who has spent two weeks playing around with adobe rubbish!!!!! I've used wise studio to manipulate the package and added the relevant reg keys and removed the customs actions - unsupportedinstalltype

I'll restate my question.

Has anyone tried to uninstall it using AD and GPO?

Thegunner can you send me a wsi of the Acrobat msi so I can see it. I'm trying to deploy Adobe Acrobat Elements and having a major problem with the uninstall. I want to see if the custom actions are the same for both packages.
