If memory serves, Microsoft's installer checks the version information of the file SHDOCVW.DLL in %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32. Don't quote me, though.

Why not just use the report: "Computers with specific software registered in Add Remove Programs"? In SCCM it's predefined report 92.

IE6 does not show in Add/Remove programs. It may be part of XP. IE7 and IE8 do show.
Does anyone know a way to query for IE6 in SCCM? Or maybe a SubSelect that shows PC without v7 & v8

Not using software monitoring.

In my SMS I don't recollect DLLs, therefore I'll query as all the machines (WXP machines) where are not installed the IE8.
