Chrome MSI issues

Are anybody else also having problems with the latest (24.0.1312.56) MSI from http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/thankyou.html?msi=true&installdataindex=defaultbrowser ?

The MSI doesn't install Chrome properly when run with /quiet and neither with /qn. Even when running it manually, it doesn't install properly. You have to restart the machine and then will it fail with a profile error on first launch.

Tested this on multiple machines and redownloaded the MSI multiple times.

Never had any similar issues with Chrome MSI.

This is interesting. I'm not seeing these errors. Downloaded the MSI from https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/business/browser, installed via msiexec.exe /qn /norestart /i "googlechromestandaloneenterprise.msi" and the install finished silently. Chrome launched without any errors or requiring a reboot.

To further test, I uploaded the MSI to the KBOX and deployed the update to my two lab PCs (Win 7 x64 and Win XP SP3), without any hiccups.

  • Hmm that is strange. I just tried to deploy it, which works better when testing it manually, but on first run I'm still getting profile error. - Erroneus 11 years ago

I tested and it failed for me as well Win 7 x64 and x86.

  • Thanks for the confirmation, seems like Google has broken something then. - Erroneus 11 years ago
  • Downloading https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/thankyou.html?standalone=1&installdataindex=defaultbrowser and using /silent /install works a bit better, as the install actually completes and creates shortcuts, but there is still an profile error on launch.

Seriously Google.. - Erroneus 11 years ago
    • I can confirm this. I've been using that download and it does indeed cause a profile error. I'll echo the "Seriously Google" sentiment. - Ben M 11 years ago

This problem was fixed in Chrome v25, so it was defiently a bug.

Look like I have found a solution.

Deploy the MSI and use the Chrome policy template to create a group policy where "Set user data directory" is enabled and use this config: ${local_app_data}\Chrome\Profile

it is not a real MSI..  just a wrapper..

  • repackage the internal setup and you're done. - jaybee96 11 years ago
    • Thanks.

Could you elaborate a bit more though, as I really don't repack and that word could have a lot of meaning. Any specific software or method you have in mind? - Erroneus 11 years ago

It is a pseudo msi.. use 7Zip and extract the files and folders.. It doesn't require installation... then create your own msi for that..

Comments:
  • Sorry, that's no good. 7Zip doesn't extract it properly and doing a msiexec /a just leaves you with another GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise.msi - Erroneus 11 years ago
  • Do you think GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise.msi is the end of world.. - jagadeish 11 years ago
