Can someone explain Merge Modules for me please?

Would someone to be kind enough to explain merge modules for me? I'm trying to learn Wise and just received my first notifcation about merge modules. What is an example of a merge module? Would it be maybe an addon that is added into Excel toolbar for example? If so why can't this be captured with the before and after snapshot? Just not grasping how they work. Do you have any recommended links on what they are exactly? Thanks.

notta,

A quick Google would bring up a large number of pages about merge modules.

Also MSDN has a section about merge modules.

Merge modules are generally components that can be used in an MSI to install a common item, such as MSXLM or VB Runtimes.
Some people swear by them... some won't touch them unless they have to, and rather include the files in their package as they are.

Hope this points you in the correct direction - have a read round and see what you think.

Thanks,

In the old days MSM was used for sharing the same components in different packages thus preventing one another to delete shared resources.
Now days we do not use it but instead rely on Conflict Manager in Wise to solve these issues.
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
