Acrobat Reader 8.1 Updater
I wish to disable the auto update on Acrobat Reader 8.1
This registry key..
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\8.0\FeatureLockdown\bUpdater = 1
will hide the Update menu under "About" but does it disable it or it still checks in the background?
If it still checks in the background, how do I disable totally?

You should be able to use the Adobe Customization Wizard to achieve this;

Hallo,
for disable the updater make a new key in registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Updater]
"Enterprise"=dword:00000001
