ZEN INNOVATIONS DEPLOYS DATA PROTECTION SOLUTION FROM ZMANDA TO BACKUP BUSINESS CRITICAL DATA

Zmanda's open source backup solution provides the ability to manage multiple platforms and a tape autoloader from a single web-based interface.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 10, 2009 -- Zmanda(tm), the leader in open source backup and recovery software, today announced that Zen Innovations (www.zen-innovations.com) has selected and deployed Amanda Enterprise (AE) to backup and protect its corporate data.

Through the use of a powerful web-based tool, Global Trade Tracker (www.globaltradetracker.com), Zen Innovations provides access to original trade statistics from the world's largest 55 principal trading countries to its customers. Global Trade Tracker provides a clear and objective picture of trade flows and provides critical information on the value and quantity of goods (e.g. oil, precious metals, food, live stock, frozen goods, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals) being imported and exported around the world. The company provides monthly trade figures, as quickly as 1-3 months after the month closes, to its customers and provides information on the value being imported or exported as well as the quantity of goods.

"Initially, to manage all of the data, Zen used scripts and manual backup procedures," said Sergio Laberer, managing director, Zen Innovations. "We were aware that this was a temporary backup solution until we could find the right backup software at the right price."

After evaluating Amanda Enterprise from Zmanda, Zen's IT department determined that Zmanda offered the best product and the best price. The most important differentiator between Amanda Enterprise and the other data protection solutions that were evaluated was its ability to manage multiple platforms using a web-based GUI.

"Our initial manual processes, scripts and cron jobs quickly started to get complicated as we grew our infrastructure," added Laberer. "We needed to do backups regularly and be in a position to recover quickly without too much manual intervention. Our initial approach was neither scalable nor suitable to work efficiently."

Zen purchased Amanda Enterprise and installed it on a backup server running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10. The company uses Zmanda backup clients for SLES 10, Solaris 10, Mac OS X, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Pro. About 650 GB of data is backed up to a Sun StorageTek SL 24 Tape Autoloader per night.

Zen Innovations' servers also hold web-based custom applications that are hosted for customers as well as internal servers such as mail and file servers - all containing business critical data. It is crucial that Zen systems engineers have the ability to recover data quickly, as most of these systems need to be operational 24x7 with minimal downtime.

"Zmanda backup solutions are rapidly gaining traction, especially in today's resource constrained world, because of the openness, simplicity and robustness of our products," said Paddy Sreenivasan, vice president of engineering, Zmanda. "Companies like Zen are recognizing that open source technology is not only more affordable, but also carries with it a community of development and testing resources that are unmatched by proprietary vendors. This ensures that Amanda Enterprise is a leading edge backup solution, with innovation being added at Internet speed."
