Can VLC repair WMV file that won’t play on Windows 10

After replacing my crashed disk I restored the files and all went well until I launched some WMV files. They won’t respond and media player gives me message “can’t recognised”. I checked the file extension and it says WMV only. I also tried other media players but still wmv files won’t play. I have heard that VLC fixes some videos for free? Is it possible to repair corrupt WMV on Windows 10 having VLC Version 2.2.4?

VLC won't fix them, it's just good at playing damaged files etc, apparently yours is a bit too buggered though.

You can certainly try the free VLC fix, but I can't say the file will get repaired successfully. There are software and online services that can restore the WMV file either entirely or partially. The WMV files needs to be analysed to determine the level of corruption. You can try Stellar Phoenix Video Repair tool (Windows 10 supported) also if VLC couldn't repair the corrupt file. The software demo is free to evaluate and can preview the copy of repaired WMV file.

I haven't used the program in some time, but I've had success with VirtualDub in the past for repairing WMV. More recent versions don't open WMVs, unfortuantely. You can find older versions and third-party codecs to get around it, though.
