wsname with dept name, os and service tag

I've been looking over wsname and it seems simple enough to add in the $serialnum, but our naming scheme is department name, os version, then serial number. Is there a way to have a gui list, or a prompt to put in the deptment/os version next to the service tag, ie:

fin7-sdf34632

has anyone done that yet, before I try to re-create the wheel?

dchristian's approach is the most common, and certainly hands-off; Another hands-off aproach I've done is use the BIOS asset field to enter their custom data (Potentially using K1 and BIOS utility like Dell's DCCU to deliver the setting to larger groups of existing PC's). So if my Asset Tag field were set to FIN on all of my finance machines I could easily automate the wsname task to handle this:
wsname.exe /N:$ASSETTAG$OSVER-$SERIALNUM

hey ngbrown24,

To fully automate I would do is create multiple naming rules for the department and OS combos.

If your looking at prompting there's tons of posts on the subject.

I'm sure you could take one of these as a base line and modify it for the drop-down effect your looking for.

Also you might want to re-think your naming convention. Fact is once you have K1 allot of the info that your adding into your name really is already provided to you via the computer record. Food For Thought!
