Definition of the Impact and Severity columns in K1000 Patching

Within DELL KACE K1000 in the Security -> Patching section there is an Impact column and a Severity column.  I'm wondering if anyone has official definitions of these columns.

Thanks for the help.

Severity tends to be the criticality of the patch based upon the vendor's definition.  The main issue is that different vendors have different ways of saying the same thing.  Critical, Important, SuperCritical are all different ways of saying "Install this ASAP".

Impact is where the criticality is leveled out.

Ultimately it's a matter of personal preference for which one you use to sort your labels.  I personally use the Impact column because I can use the same wording regardless of who the publisher is.

I believe the impact is whether it is a recommended or critical patch. I did a search of the admin guide for severity, and the only thing I found was something for OVAL. I did not see a severity section in my patch list.

  • I could not find anything either. I'm looking to find out how to setup labels within KACE where it helps to know the differences between impact and severity. - hdmetal 10 years ago
