Windows Installer crash after running
Hi!
I have noticed a strange behaviour when I install MapInfo 8.0.
I dunno if it has something to do with that I am upgrading from MapInfo version 7.5.
After I have installed MapInfo 8.0 Windows Installer crashes, and will not start again (even if I try start the Windows Installer service manually) until after Windows reboot.
Anyone else that got any experience of this Windows Installer crash?
I first thought it was a temporary failure, but I tried on another machine, with the same problem.
/Jonas

Inspect the following registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations
after your MapInfo installation to see whether there are any file operations pending that would require a reboot.
If you find anything in this key, take another look through your verbose log file and see if you can find anything related to the pending operation.
The package might, for example, be trying to operate on a file that is currently locked (perhaps because a running service has hold of it)

Hi both of you, and thank you for your reply.
The MapInfo 7.5 is a SnapShot MSI Package, but the 8.0 is made by the manufacture.
I have made a MST to 8.0 to apply some settings and add a few files.
As fas as I can see does not the installations overwrite any Windows Installer keys.
When I did run a verbose logging I noticed a message at the end of the (20000 lines) logfile.
1: Shutting down the PRC server...
1: RPC server shut down.
1: MsiServerStartup ends
Is this message supposed to come? What does it mean with the PRC server? Is it just a spelling error foe RPC?
I also noticed a strange Event Viewer message in Application for the MsiInstaller:
Failed to connect to the server. Error: 0x800703FA
A search for the error code on google does only give two replies, with the same cryptical text:
-2147023878 0x800703FA Illegal operation attempted on a Registry key which has been marked for deletion.
Any ideas?

Hi ChaosNL and you others!
I have tried many thing, but not really any sucess.
I decided to try to use the SMS-server to se what happends if the package gets installed this way.
On the first machine (without MapInfo 7.5) did it work fine. I tried with another machine (with MapInfo 7.5) and got the error "Wrong serialnumber" (?!?!?). I tried on a third machine and got the same serialnumber error again.
I tried to install it manually, but the installation did just stop without any error message except for "Installation could not complete".
I did reinstall the ISScript 10.50, without any success.
After that did I try to remove the folder with the ISScript, but got the message that the IDriver.exe-file was in use.
I noticed that the IDriver.exe had six running processes. I killed all, removed the files and reinstalled the ISScript.
After that, the installation worked fine. Edit: The Windows Installer is still crashing
Now have I started to make my own MSI-file instead, because of the problems with the package. We have about 250 clients using MapInfo, so I don't want to take any chances...

Hey Jonasm,
Is the problem with the 7.5 uninstall or the 8.0 install?
If you use installrite before and after a 7.5 removal it should highlight what gets removed (if thats your problem).
Does the same thing happen when you install the vendor MSI without your MST?
Does it happen on a clean machine (without 7.5 previously installed)?
